Sunscreen is important without saying, for both your kids and the whole family. It protects your skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. We've all heard about the dangers of the sun, haven't we? The benefits of wearing sunscreen include decreasing your risk of developing skin cancer & preventing early aging, as well as skin damage due to sunburns. But with so many brands out there, how do we choose the best sunscreen for our kids? Quick answer: natural, organic and chemical-free sunscreen options should be your first choice when carrying for your baby sensitive skin.

We've done extensive research on most common brands of sunscreen for kids and babies available on the market for both Canada and USA. Overall we've surveyed over 25 brands who claim to be suitable for babies. What we've found out: no two sunscreens are the same – some can bring more harm than good. Out of all of the baby sunscreens, we looked at, we've selected our Top 9 brands who indeed deliver on their promise.

In this post, we'll walk you through our methodology, go over the terminology used around sunscreen products, and hopefully help you make educated choices in the future.

Basic Sunscreen Terminology

Sunlight, in addition to summer fun, brings us two types of harmful rays.

UVA – stands for “ultraviolet-A rays”. These are long waves, which penetrate deep into our skin, drying it out from inside and playing a role in premature skin aging.

UVB – stands for “ultraviolet-B rays” – these are short waves, which burn the top layer of your skin. These may be responsible for your summer sunburn, as well as these can cause skin cancers.

SFP – stands for “Sun Protection Factor”. The number next to it, eg. “30”, “40” etc. is the time calculated by comparing how long it takes sunscreen-protected skin exposed to UVB rays to burn to the length of time it takes unprotected skin to burn. The higher the number the better you are protected from UVB. SFP 30 means 30 min, SFP 60 is 60 min etc.

How We Choose Our Sunscreen

Our family is on a mission to make every possible effort to live an eco-friendly sustainable lifestyle. When it comes to choosing Sunscreen products, these are the factors we consider:

Stay away from sprays

We use lotion or stick only.

When applying sprays to your body, it is impossible to control the spray direction, and you'll find greasy stains all over your furniture, floor, sand/grass, and clothing.

Most sprays are very bad at absorbing, they cover your skin as a kinda film that, once in the water, washes out and forms a disgusting greasy film on the water. I mean, yuck!

But most importantly sprays contain toxic ingredients, that are harmful to both your own skin, but as well for marine life and especially fragile coral reef ecosystems. Therefore:

Chemical-Free Sunscreens

No Oxybenzone, No Octinoxate, No Parabens, No Phthalates, No Sulfates, No Octisalate, No other chemicals you can't pronounce…

Did you know that Hawaii has already officially banned sunscreens that contain the reef-damaging chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate? Yep!

Organic Sunscreen Ingredients

Our rule of thumb is: if the sunscreen has more than a dozen hard-pronounced ingredients – we are out!

As with everything, we are opting for all Organic and all Natural solutions. Many sunscreen brands will state on their packaging “Certified Organic” and “Certified Natural”.

Bio-Degradable & Recyclable Packaging

In most cases, if the sunscreen is made of natural ingredients, it is biodegradable (aka eco-friendly), but doesn't hurt to look for this information on the packaging.

When it comes to the packaging itself, our preference is always given to packaging made of 100% recycled materials, AND it be 100% recyclable after the use.

Zinc or Titanium-based?

Titanium dioxide is very effective at blocking UVB and short-spectrum UVA rays, but it is less effective than Zinc Dioxide/Oxide at blocking long UVA rays. Therefore when choosing a sunscreen, Zinc Oxide based sunscreens will provide better protection for a broad spectrum of UVA/UVB rays.

Our Research on Kids Sunscreens Available in Canada/USA

We've investigated 25+ Sunscreen Lotions that claim to be suitable for babies available in major stores and on Amazon to see if there are adequate choices when it comes to natural kids-friendly sunscreens.

It is interesting that some brands are not entirely “organic sunscreens for kids”, but try to seem this way saying “with organic ingredients” – don't be fooled by this.

Other brands will say they are chemical-free sunscreen for babies – this does not necessarily mean that this option is organic.

Below are our results based purely on assessing the ingredients list and information provided on the packaging. Some brands we've tried, others we have not.

IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE: Please note, we are not doctors nor medical practitioners. At no time do we recommend one brand over another. At no time do we attempt to give a medical advise. Our research results are provided for information purpose only. At no time do we accept any responsibility for the choices made by you, whether or not relevant to the information provided below.

Canadian Dermatology Association

CDA Expert Advisory Board recognized products meet the following criteria:

  • Broad-spectrum with an SPF 30 or higher
  • Low potential for irritation
  • Minimally perfumed or non-perfumed
  • Non-comedogenic

You can check out the full list of Officially Recognized Sunscreens in CANADA HERE

BEWARE: What you'll notice, CDA has a list of most commercial brands. Smaller amazing all-organic baby sunscreen brands are completely missing from their list. Frankly, I haven't found even one sunscreen on CDA list that I have on our TOP-choice list… I mean, does it have to do with brands needing to pay for approval?…

Stay Safe in The Sun

Whatever choice you've ended up making (as long it IS chemical-free sunscreen for kids! haha), it is imperative that you'd follow the directions for the use specified on the packaging.

Most common rules in using sunscreens are:

  • External use only
  • Do not use on damaged or broken skin
  • Do not use on eyes (even fully organic sunscreen for babies can be harmful on the eyes)
  • If a skin rash or allergic reaction – ask your doctor
  • For babies – consult a doctor prior to use, and look for a specific statement on the packaging that would outline age restrictions if any

Take note if your chosen baby sunscreen is waterproof or water-resistant. Apply in advance and reapply as directed.

REMEMBER: When it comes down to it, using any type of sunscreen on your child is better than no sunscreen at all.

There are just so many things to take into consideration these days. My boys are all teens now, but I do still care about what goes on their skin. In fact, we have to be even more careful because of the youngest and his food allergies. Some related ingredients just aren’t safe for him.

as a mother you’ll always care – even when they are having their own kids. and yes we know first hand how hard it is with allergies and sensitive skin. that’s one of the reasons we do very detailed research now on everything.

My kids get annoyed with me because I make them use lotion. The spray just does not seem to do the job. Of course, they are 17 and 13, so getting a bit harder to get them to obey when it comes to putting on the sunscreen!

….I remember being a “know it all” teenager myself not so long ago. but now I am a mother and I keep telling my own mom – thank you I wish I’ve listened to you more 🙂 Hope your kids come to this realization sooner :)))))

It’s so important to make sure sunscreen is safe for you and the environment, thanks for sharing this info!

thank you for kind words, yes our family had recently started making significant attempts towards living sustainable and eco-friendly life. that’s also at the top of the list to teach our children

Thanks for these tips. I need to buy some to have on hand for when my grandson. Visits. I appreciate the info!

I had to show this to my mom as well hahahaha! somehow grandmas are even more protective of the grandkids than in a parent-child relationship!

This is great information! Not many people think about this. Thanks for sharing!

thank you! my friends ask me all the time about this stuff.. .finally got to blogging so we can share more research info living natural eco-friendly lifestyle

I am sending this to my daughter. This is so important. So many chemicals out there that we do not want!

I am sending this to my daughter. This is so important. So many chemicals out there that we do not want!

thank you! I’m thrilled we can help!

This is great information. We don’t live near an ocean, so sometimes I forget to think about what’s in a sunscreen. It’s important to remember what is toxic to you and the environment when choosing a one.

I know right! by some reason you’d only go shopping for sunscreen when going overseas to a beach destination. but some of the other places including at ski resorts are pretty bad when it comes to sun exposure!

Great post! As someone from a family of people with fair Irish skin, I’ll have to pass this advice along to my relatives with little ones.

I am somewhat mixed and have a darker skintone with good tolerance towards sun, but my little one inherited my husband’s fair skin and blue eyes…. so this post came out of great necessity 🙂

Really great information, thank you!

happy to be of service!

I recently read an article about a toddler that got a caustic burn from using a spray on sunblock. We really do need to do our research. It’s a shame that we can’t rely on the companies to provide safe products for our precious babes.

oh I am seeing those everywhere! if you did sign-up for our Top Secret Library access, you would have seen the full list of brands we’ve investigated. SPOILER ALERT: the most famous brand Banana Boat is heading our top worst list… their lotion stuff is toxic enough, it is hard to imagine what goes into their sprays….. but kids are consistently burned.

I have wondered about the eco-friendly ones, but truthfully, have not taken the time to research. Thank you for this.

same here… we only got to really researching our products after Cosmos was born. Kids DO make us all better 🙂

My kids are very fair and I am like the sunblock master always reapplying it! Great advice about the different kinds and what to look for!

the scary part is that most supermarkets sell only toxic chemical stuff. it is soooo hard to find natural product outside Amazon..

This is very helpful. I like that the toxins are called out for both our lil ones and the ones in our oceans! Hawaii has banned selling many due to the reef die-off. Being knowledgeable is the first step – thank you for helping others.

thank you, we are so happy we could be of help. and yes we treat our planet as our baby – if we’re not taking care of it, who will?

This is very important info and I feel like lots of people don’t think about all the details.

I’ve only started thinking about this stuff after becoming a mother myself. That’s when safety first kicks in.
….After we’ve done our research we went to the local Walmart to see what’s available on the shelves, and we were horrified! most of the shelves were filled with the two of the brands that received our worst rating + there were few more we had in the “yellow category” – all of them said baby-friendly, but contained hard chemicals and toxic stuff. I am so glad we’ve done our research and are now ordering from Amazon

Great tips! I love that you are trying to stay away from products that are toxic to marine life…sometimes we do not think about this and it is truly important! Thank you

So glad to see & hear the concern for ourselves, our environment, & especially our marine/coral systems are being taken into consideration when using sunscreens. I make my own, but these are some great alternatives!

thank you for your comment. You’ve mentioned you make your own?! Would you please be so kind to share the recipe! We love home-made products!

Oh I am so glad I read this. With 4 small children, one being a baby, I def. need and want my kids to be safe and protected!

it is funny we only start looking at safe options after we have our babies 🙂 we’ve never had this way of thinking back in the younger age!

This is true for all not just kids. I have always had a hard time using the sprays and not getting burned,

What we’ve learned visiting Hawaii is that sprays are toxic for marine life, especially for coral reefs. they are banning those sunscreens completely now!

Great information! Those sprays scared me years ago when I noticed they would remove nail polish and eat through the top layer of a driver’s license. eek!
