Starfish Varadero Location

Starfish Varadero All-inclusive location map

There are two Starfish resorts in Varadero: Starfish Cuatros Palmas and Starfish Varadero All-Inclusive.

Starfish Varadero is the one we’ve stayed at.

The resort is located right in the middle of the Varadero beach strip, in our opinion quite conveniently.

One of the days you can walk on the beach all the way to Marina – the furthest end of the strip. The full walk is about an hour one way. You have an option of taking a taxi back or walk back – just be mindful of time.

On another day you can walk on the beach all the way to Varadero town – the full walk is about 1.5 hours.

Other benefits of Starfish location: both the Varadero Dolphinarium and the Ecological Reserve (Reserva Ecologica Varahicacos) with its famous Cave Ambrosio (Cueva de Ambrosio) are only 10 min walking distance away.

Starfish Varadero review – Location – AMAZING.

Setting Expectations

Before I go into details about our experience, I do want to set up your expectations straight: you are in Cuba. Please please please do not expect much, and come with an open mind.

Starfish Varadero is rated as a 3-star hotel by the Tour Operator – in Cuba, this rating is in many cases quite irrelevant. When it comes to Cuban hotels and resorts, TripAdvisor’s rating will tell you much more than any standard hotel star-rating accepted through-out the world.

Starfish Varadero: check-out the rating and read recent reviews here – at the time of our travel Starfish Varadero was #17 out of 82 resort in Varadero.

Both 3-star resorts and 5-star resorts go through the same trouble. As Cuba is under embargo, there are serious shortages of many products, including basic consumer goods such as toothpaste, basic vitamins, and even many fruits and vegetables. Cubans, including local resort management, has to rely heavily on local food supplies and services. So the food quality and selection may not differ much between resorts. Or, for example, if the local laundry service is out of order: both 3-star and 5-star resorts won’t have fresh towels.

.

Starfish Varadero Property

Starfish Varadero resort property view

Starfish Varadero is quite large – expect a lot of walking.

There is one huge building complex which has 9 identified buildings with hotel rooms. And in addition, there are 19 beachfront bungalows – 2-story houses that have 8 2-room suites each.

.

The resort premises are quite clean. Garbage bins are located literally every five meters. Hotel staff is doing a great job cleaning, sweeping and mopping. I liked that all the safety precautions have been met – any time the floor is wet, you can see a few of those orange signs standing all around.

My only concern, quite a big one actually for a parent traveling with one active 4yo, is the main staircase in the main building. The staircase is round with stairs being uneven width, and the staircase itself is granite (or some material like it) with sharp edges. It is NOT a non-slippery surface. There are handrails of course, but my tiny human is too short to grab it… He tripped a few times rushing down the staircase – not too bad just a few bum bruises, but in my [Canadian] opinion this staircase is dangerous.

So, Dear Parents, if you travel with toddlers – watch them closely in the main building so they do not run up/down or play around the staircase.

Special Note on Customer Service: Customer Service is open 24/7 – there is always someone in there regardless of the time of day. Everyone who we've dealt with at Starfish Varadero customer service was amazing. Thank you.

Bars

Starfish Varadero has seven bars.

Snack Bar Beachside Grill is conveniently located right next to the beach and, in addition to drinks, serves snacks such as sandwiches and burgers. I loved the staff here! Best service ever!

Bar Spirits located on the second floor, serves the best coffee and their staff made the best Pina Coladas in the whole resort.

Starfish Varadero resort property view - bar Spirits

Bar Aces was working usually only in the evening, as there is an entertainment stage right near it. It did not have much selection of drinks, just the very basics.

Sports Bar Legends located in the main building on the third floor has two pool tables that anyone can use at no additional charge. Condition is quite decent, although the tables are a bit shaky.

Father and son are playing pool

Bar Piscina – near the second pool (see about pools below) was open, but since there weren’t ever any people here – no one was using it.

Snack Bar Cabana, next to the main swimming pool, had very decent sandwiches and yummy fries. In addition, the ladies staffing this location were absolutely adorable. They even helped my 4yo to practice his Spanish. And that’s the only place in the whole hotel we could find the REAL MILK (see Food Notes below)

Starfish Varadero review – Bars – OK.

Restaurants

There are four restaurants, although when we stayed only three actually worked.

A La Carte

Restaurant Milans and Restaurant Spoons – two available a la carte restaurants. We haven’t been able to try those for a few reasons.

Milans served pizza and pasta dishes – but both Alex and I are primal diet followers, a diet that does not include much grains and carb dishes.

Spoons advertized international cuisine – but we came to Cuba to eat local! We live in Canada and we have plenty of high-quality amazing restaurants of all kinds.

In addition, both restaurants require formal attire. We do not typically bring formal to tropical destinations… and of course, traveling with a picky 4-year old Cosmos… nah.. Instead, we’ve made a choice to venture into Varadero Downtown and tried local Cuban lobster restaurants which were A-mazing!

Buffet

Sizzlers the Grill – was closed, probably as there were not too many people – we’ve stayed at the shoulder-season in mid-November.

Buffet Griddle is the main restaurant serving all meals.

Although it is quite a large place, we did experience seat shortage during the rush-hour. Rush-hour?! Yup.

On the second day of staying at Starfish Varadero we’ve figured out the “success plan”. If you want to get food, you have to arrive at the buffer right when the doors are open. It wasn’t about the best selection even – it was about getting food at all.

That means arriving at breakfast before 8am, to lunch right at 1:30pm and to dinner – before 7pm.

Twice we’ve arrived at breakfast shortly after 8am only to find that the Chef ran out of eggs… Meat dishes, cheese, and my favorite papaya fruit were usually gone within the first hour.

Many other guests have figured out the same – and the first hour of any meal was a rush-hour with long line-ups to the Chef and shortage of seats.

SPECIAL THANK YOU: Want to take this opportunity and say a special Thank You to the Starfish Varadero staff at Breakfast. As mentioned, my 4yo Cosmos is a picky eater. For breakfast, he loves egg-fried rice. Well, Griddle did not serve rice for breakfast at all. But we’ve asked and were heard! They made it happen, although never heard of it and we had to show them, haha. Thereafter, each time we approached, the Chef that makes omelets had a little plate with rice sitting next to him and was happy to practice his newly acquired egg-fried-rice-making skills to the delight of my little one! THANK YOU!

Starfish Varadero review – Restaurants – GOOD.

Food Notes

Once again, setting up expectations.

I read a lot of reviews on TripAdvisor about Cuban hotels both 3- and 5- stars saying the food in Cuba is awful… It is NOT. It is very different.

Unlike Mexico, Dominica, European and Asian sunny destinations, where you can find foods specially catered for each client, like delicious burgers and pasta alongside a local selection of tacos, seviche or pizzas, Cuba serves Cuban food.

In Cuba, both locals and resorts have to rely on local food supply [embargo dah..]. Cubans, in fact, do a great job working with what they have. The food you’ll find is simple, I’d even say basic, but filling and delicious nevertheless. You only need to know what to look for.

Meats

Do not expect amazing beef steaks, or frankly beef of any kind.. Beef is not common in Cuba.

Instead, look for seafood and BBQ chicken.

The buffet had everything: many kinds of local fish, muscles, clams, tiger prawns, and even lobster on the last two days of our stay!

Starfish Varadero offered a very nice rabbit dish at almost every dinner meal – if you haven’t yet, rabbit is a must-try!

Pork dishes are good too. One of the best finds ever was Pan Con Lechon (“Cuban Sandwich”) – that is bread, pulled pork and special lime juice-based sauce – yummm!

Fruit

The fruit selection was not bad, but hey, we are in Cuba! There was usually watermelon, pineapple, papaya, guava, and Cuban oranges.

Papaya in Cuba is the absolute best! I could not stop myself, it is so delicious.

Bad news for my picky toddler: he didn’t want to try any of it, as he was used to apples, pears, and carrots, that Starfish Varadero was not offering. Obviously so, as apples do not grow in Cuba and carrots are hard to find.

Same for juices: you can get pineapple, guava, and mango juice no problem – but not apple juice. So if your child wants specifically apple juice – you’ll have to bring juice boxes with you (like we did).

.

MILK

Our 4yo Cosmos loves milk. He even learned it in Spanish how to order it: “Uno leche frio por favor!” Sadly, we could not find real milk or other dairy products, anywhere in the resort, other than at Snack Bar Cabana, including the main restaurant.

Isn’t it weird, as notorious pina colada is supposed to be made with cream?! Apparently all the “milk” at Starfish Varadero is made of mixing the powder with water – all milk used for coffee, cocktails, desserts, anything else – it is all made of powder.

In addition, they mix it in such a proportion that it only gives water white color and slight taste – it tastes like if I took ¼ glass of milk and poured 3/4 glass of water to it. SAD.

One of the locals told us that Milk and real cow dairy products are almost impossible to get in Cuba. There are not too many cows on the island – cows are expensive to care for and are regulated. Both beef and dairy are expensive. Cubans rely on chicken and pork. Due to the embargo situation, they are not importing dairy products too.

Well, Dear Hotel Management, we get it – milk is hard to get. However please kindly at least mix the powder to a proper concentration so it tastes like milk… Thank you.

Mojito

Cuba is famous for Mojitos – Mojito drink was in fact invented in Cuba. Mojitos should be everywhere, right? WRONG! At Starfish Varadero we were only able to enjoy Mojito on the first day after arrival. Thereafter and for the full duration of our stay: there was no mint available.

Want a Mojito at Starfish Varadero? Travel to Varadero and try to buy mint somewhere, then bring your own mint to the bar and they’ll gladly serve you the mojito.

.

Swimming Pools

There are two sets of pools – one next to the main restaurant, and another behind the large building.

Starfish Varadero resort property view - main swimming pool near the buffet restaurant

Interestingly, I haven’t seen a single person using the second set of pools! Many guests staying at bungalows probably didn’t even know about those, and the guests staying in buildings next to it wanted to be closer to the beach… Too bad as there is even an open-air jacuzzi in there!

Starfish Varadero review – Swimming Pools – VERY GOOD.

Starfish Varadero resort property view - secondary swimming pool behind the large building

.

Sports & Wellness

There is a gym right next to the second set of pools, and massage rooms. Once again, not a single person in there – just my husband Alex. Equipment is very basic, but there is a lot to choose from if you are into maintaining your exercise routine.

Starfish Varadero resort property view - gym

I loved that Starfish Varadero has tennis courts. We haven’t been able to play as our 4yo Cosmos wanted to spend every single moment at the beach! But if you travel by yourself or your kids are older – I strongly recommend playing. From the look of it, the courts are well maintained and ..yet again no people to use it – so no line-ups for equipment.

Right next to the main restaurants you’ll also notice table-tennis aka ping-pong tables – we had a lot of fun playing.

Starfish Varadero review – Sports – OK.

.

Varadero Beach

Starfish Varadero resort property view - path to the beach

Starfish Varadero is a beachfront property. There is direct access to the beach. Actually two: one is accessible, and passes a set of washrooms, the Beachside Grill and the open showers to rinse off the sand. The other “secret” one is located between bungalows 12 and 13 – not accessible by wheelchairs/strollers.

Starfish Varadero resort property view - beach, palm tree beach umbrellas and lounge chairs

The beach portion that belongs to Starfish Varadero is quite large. It has two rows of palm tree beach umbrellas and enough lounge chairs for everyone.

Not as crowded as in Mexico either, which is amazing as you can enjoy both having fun in the ocean and taking photos with no one in the background!

Starfish Varadero staff are fun: there are games on the beach every day, including volleyball, sand ball challenges, etc.

There are Lifeguards on duty at the beach the whole day too, so you can feel safe.

Starfish Varadero review – Location – AMAZING. ***had to take off points for pollution concern – see below.

.

Beach Pollution Concern

One sad thing I must admit about the beach, however. The magnificent beach of Varadero that is famous for its crystal clear turquoise waters and soft white sand is no longer clean.

Starfish Varadero did a good job in placing garbage bins every 10 meters throughout the beach, and ashtrays at almost each palm tree beach umbrella, but they should be doing a better job in removing the garbage and cleaning the beach. Starfish Varadero advertises on their website that they clean the beach daily, however, when we stayed at the resort, we’ve only seen cleaning done once a week.

Yes, there is a problem with single-use plastic glasses and straws that resort dispenses its beachside drinks in. But the biggest problem is with smoking and cigarette buds literally everywhere.

At the time of our stay, over 80% of guests at the resort were from Eastern Europe. The overwhelming majority of Russians from Russia are smokers. I do not have anything against Russians or Russia, after all, we were born back in the USSR and speak the Russian language, but it was upsetting to see smokers putting out their cigarettes in the sand next to their lounge chair and just leaving it there… Why is it so hard to walk to the garbage bin?

For us, after living 13+ years in Canada, in British Columbia – one of the leading locations driving environmentalism, this carelessness and complete disregard of concern for the environment was right into our faces. Most upsettingly, it was coming from our own people… so sad.

Plastic's timeline to decompose is 500-1000 years, by the way… and cigarette buds are one of the most toxic things that can happen to the ocean. That garbage washed into the ocean with the tide would almost certainly be eaten by some turtle, a fish or a bird… Check out the Web-Gallery by Chris Jordan, the famous photographer who captures what happens to birds eating plastics…

This is not necessarily only Starfish Varadero's problem, but a problem for everyone in Cuba. The minute Varadero loses its clean beach, they instantly lose Canadian and European tourists.

Environmental Lesson and Action

Nevertheless, we’ve taken this sad situation with Varadero beach pollution for an opportunity to teach our son a lesson.

A Child with Red Sand-Bucket full of cigarette buds - beach pollution

Instead of collecting seashells, every day we’ve taken his red sand bucket and walked around the beach fishing out and collecting cigarette buds out of the sand. We’d pick the full bucket, and throw the buds into hotel-provided garbage bin each day. I was explaining to my little one how this trash is dangerous and showing photos of the internet how birds are eating it. Cosmos got really fond of this “game” and was super-proud doing the clean-up.

Fourth days after, another family next to us, with two girls ages 4 and 6, asked to borrow the red sand bucket, and they too searched the beach around them for cigarette buds, throwing them into the garbage and teaching kids about pollution.

Overall during our stay, we’ve probably cleaned more than two dozen full red sand buckets of cigarette buds.

RED BUCKET CHALLENGE

Since you are reading this, I challenge YOU.

Next time you are at the beach in Cuba, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, Bali, India… anywhere in the World.

Step 1. Pick a 500 ml jar or larger

Step 2. Collect it full of trash recovered from under your feet

Step 3. Dispose of this trash in a proper manner – by throwing it into the designated garbage bin.

Step 4. Spread the word: post a photo on social media and tag #RedBucketChallenge #OceanPollution #PerfectDayToPlay #BlueOceanWatch

Step 5. Challenge at least 5 of your friends

If each of us collects and takes away just one bucket of trash, collectively we'll make a huge difference. Each one bucket of trash potentially saves dozens of marine life habitats. If you want to see Change in the World, you have to BE THE CHANGE.

Water Sports

Starfish Varadero offers tons of fun water sports both for free and at additional cost. Sea canoeing and kayaking are included, as well as sailing, snorkeling and aqua aerobics are included with your stay.

Woman in a snorkel taking a selfie under water

For snorkeling, you can get a private catamaran for 20 cuc to take you to the nearby coral reefs. The trip is well worth it – the fish is plenty and fun. You can get the snorkeling equipment at the resort, or bring your own. If you are into snorkeling, we recommend bringing your own equipment from home. And do take your go-pro with you – you won’t want to miss some of the amazing colorful fish!

Diving is also offered at additional cost. We haven’t tried it at Starfish Varadero, as our 4 yo does not dive yet. However, our understanding is that you can make arrangements for a diving trip with either customer service or with the locals that are staffing water sports at the beach.

Starfish Varadero review – Water Sports – VERY GOOD.

Entertainment

Starfish Varadero night entertainment was OK. Nothing extraordinary or special.

We loved that every evening at the main building on the second floor there was a live singing performance.

The main theatre stage is small and in poor condition, but it can still accommodate small dancing performances which were quite fun. Two of the cool things we’ve actually enjoyed was the Magic Show and a Water-Dancing performance that was put up at the main swimming pool one of the nights.

Otherwise, there is not much to say about the entertainment at Starfish Varadero.

Starfish Varadero review – Entertainment – GOOD.

.

Kids Entertainment

There are indeed kids-focused amenities at Starfish Varadero.

A man playing kids pool

The main building has a game room with all sorts of entertainment for all ages: from board games to video-games, to mini soccer and mini pool. We liked that there is always an attendant there to help kids with setting up and making sure things are kept neat.

Next to the main swimming pool, there is a Kids club.

As to the Mini Disco aka Kids Party that is advertised by the resort, we were very disappointed.

Starfish Varadero resort property view - fun Club - kids club by the swimming pool

.

Mini Disco Disappointment

Mini Disco is supposed to be every day at the main stage from 8:30pm to 9:30pm – it was meant to be a kids party with kids songs, dancing, and contests.

We stayed at the resort for 7 days. Our 4yo son loves dancing and he was quite excited that there is a kids party offered…

  • Day 1 and 2 – there was no Mini Disco at all.
  • Day 3 – we arrived at the theatre at 8:45pm only to be told that the show was over.
  • Day 4 – we came back from an excursion and slept.
  • Day 5 – we could see from the restaurant windows the Mini Disco is ON. We finished dinner at 8:40pm, came to the theatre at 8:45pm – only to see it was over…
  • Day 6 – we were at the theatre at 8:30pm sharp. Along with 2 other kids. The show started at 8:32pm and after playing 2 songs, it was over at 8:38pm. I’ve asked the entertainment lady to continue, as the resort had many kids staying in, and my son and other 2 girls were excited. Her response was that she would not do it for only 3 kids. Whaaat?!!! I mean, even if there was just 1 child, she HAD TO DO THE FULL SHOW. I asked again, but she just walked away.
Starfish Varadero resort property view - kids entertainment - mini disco. Three kids on stage

My son was so upset, he was crying for half an hour. I was so upset, I stormed the Customer Service office and wrote a two-page complaint. I didn't do it for any kind of compensation. We are generally very accepting and accommodating – it is hard to trigger me. Nevertheless here I was in full “mama bear” mode as my son’s expectations were ruined.

The Assistant General Manager found us the next day, offered apologies and gave Cosmos a toy airplane souvenir as a token of sorry. It was very nice of him. I do not know if anything had changed, as we left two days after missing Day 7 in favour of a full night's sleep before the flight.

Dear Starfish Varadero management:

You can not advertise services if these services are not actually being provided. Especially when it comes to families and kids services. We, parents, take a great deal of stress traveling with our little ones. Happy child for us means successful vacation. If our child is unhappy, they’ll make our [parents] lives hell = vacation is ruined.

Therefore lesson 101: happy kids = happy parents = good feedback = more return clients = more business and more tips for staff = happy staff = better service = good feedback = more return clients = … you get the idea.

Family has paid for staying at your resort. My son is not at fault that other kids didn’t show up. He showed up. If that specific lady wasn’t willing to do her job and perform for three excited kids, maybe she shouldn’t be working with kids at all. If there was just one child, she should have performed the full show.

Starfish Varadero review – Kids Entertainment – ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.

.

Accessibility

I am happy to report: Starfish Varadero is a wheelchair accessible and stroller-friendly hotel. This includes wheelchair ramps everywhere – the main building, restaurant, everywhere on hotel premises and even the entrance to the beach! Yey!

In addition, the main building complex has elevators, and they worked all the time! The reason I am so excited: in 2015 we’ve stayed at another Varadero resort, 5-star at that time, and both elevators in our building were broken.

.

Our Room

Starfish Varadero resort property view - bungalows

We’ve been given a suite in bungalow 19 (room 19-4 on the second floor), conveniently located between the beach and the main restaurant.

The suite consisted of two rooms – the bedroom and the lounge aka living room. There was a balcony within the bedroom too, with two lounge chairs, a table, and a massive ashtray.

The condition of the room was decent.

Once again, when traveling to Cuba we do not usually expect much.

The bathroom, but clean and everything functioning well. The room furniture was showing heavy signs of wear too, but once again, all was clean and all drawers and cabinets working. There were two TVs, a mini-fridge and a coffee maker = all working.

Starfish Varadero provided a Beach Towel per each guest. We’ve also found an umbrella in our room, which we even used once!

There was a large bottle of water offered daily, decaffeinated coffee and sugar next to the coffee-maker.

Bathroom amenities included a hairdryer, magnifying mirror, towels, soap, 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash. We brought our own care products (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, etc.) with us so I can’t comment on the quality of the stuff offered. I do recommend however to bring your own. I will be writing a separate post on Things To Pack For Cuba – stay tuned!

hotel in-room bed decor made of towels

.

The room was cleaned on a daily basis, and our cleaner did an amazing job! Interestingly, the Do Not Disturb Sign was offered in two languages = English and Russian.

Also, for the 8 days of our stay, we haven’t seen a single cockroach! That is absolutely unheard of in Cuba – good job Starfish Varadero!

Starfish Varadero review – Room – VERY GOOD.

.

Safe

Our Starfish Varadero room had a Safe. However it was programmed to your room key access, and to be able to use it you had to ask for it at the Front Desk and pay 2 cuc per day.

Internet

Coming from Canada and traveling a lot, we are used to our own provider offering roaming options to be used overseas. We made sure to turn it on before the travel. It worked perfectly in the past. This time, however, it did not.

All the roaming for any company goes through the single cell operator in Cuba = Cubacel. They have a 3G data network, which is slow in itself… Problem was that there was no reception at Starfish Varadero for Cubacel. At least data did not come through for both my iPhone and my husband's Android phones. It did work in Havana and around Varadero downtown, but not at the resort.

Luckily, Starfish Varadero offers WiFi service for 1 cuc per hour, which is a quite decent speed. It only connects around the main building and the main restaurant, but good enough.

So, Dear fellow travelers, if you are planning to travel and work in Cuba and require internet – think twice and skip StarFish Varadero. A better choice of a place to stay will be a resort right next to the Varadero downtown.

.

Cash

What currency should you bring?

Starfish Varadero offers a decent exchange rate for the US dollar, Canadian dollar, and Euro. The best rate is for US Dollars though. So if you are traveling from Canada or Europe – bring US dollars.

Cuban currency is CUC. Yes, they have two currencies CUC and the other one just for locals, but you’ll only be using CUC or US dollars (some taxi drivers prefer to be paid in the US and will give you a good discount).

DO GIVE TIPS. Give to your server, to the chef that made you eggs for breakfast, to your maid, to the bartender, to musicians that perform at dinner… budget to give 0.5 – 1 cuc to everyone, and more to anyone who exceeded your expectations.

.

What’s Around & Things To Do In Varadero

You may be tempted to spend the whole vacation at the resort, and I get it! The Varadero beach is well worth it to be at the beach every day!

I, however, encourage you to venture out and explore local culture, meet local people, learn some Spanish to communicate and get adventurous!

Starfish Varadero Conclusion – Honest Feedback

Should you come to visit Cuba? Absolutely!

Should you choose Varadero? Yes, at least once! The Varadero town is a fun place and there are many things to do in Varadero. As well, their beach needs some cleaning with the Red Sand Bucket Challenge!

Should you stay at Starfish Varadero resort?

Honestly, up to you.

Our honest feedback: Starfish Varadero is indeed a very decent place to stay. We did stay at 5-star resorts in Varadero in the past which were well worse than Starfish Varadero 3-star property. The hotel staff is absolutely fantastic, we do not have a single complaint (except for the kids' show lady) and only good experiences with everyone at the resort. The Starfish Varadero management is certainly trying their best and we can see and feel it. The property is clean, decently maintained and is being slowly restored and rebuilt to be even better.

Starfish Varadero review – Overall experience – GOOD.

Message to the management

  • Do keep up in doing a good job in cleanliness.
  • Start paying much better attention to the beach pollution problem – you need to do a much better job in cleaning out plastics and cigarette buds.
  • Figure out the Kids entertainment, please.
  • Do praise and take care of your staff = your people are the best value you have.

I recently had to decline a trip to Cuba. We love going there but the food would have been an issue. We can not eat pork, rabbit or shellfish and sometimes you do not have a choice. I love it there though. And I love the trash pick up idea! We just got back from Jamaica and Central America and I was amazed at how much garbage was out there. Great review!

The kids club, did you guys use this service? If so, were you comfortable with the care provided? That is always one of my biggest concerns.

Thanks for sharing an honest review. we have an almost 4 year old and she would have been so sad for the inconsistent entertainment as well.

I’d love to visit Cuba. I’m plant based…no meat, dairy, seafood, etc. Are there vegan options in the restaurants?

I cannot wait to take my family somewhere like this! So sunny and fun!

The pictures are awesome. Did you take them with a camera or a cell phone?

Looks like a lovely resort! I’m curious what you learned about the teen activities, if anything. And, also, did they get back with you about the sad disco situation?

I loved Cuba, but it is a communist country and they struggle with extreme poverty, as well as resources. I remember eating a lot of chicken and bread and did I mention chicken?!

What a fantastically detailed post! It sounds like there were some ups and down, but in general you seemed to have had a fantastic stay!!

I love that they learned how to make fried rice for your son, and that you can bring mint if you really fancy a mojito! It sounds like the staff went above and beyond (apart from the disco lady!)

It looks really empty. Were you there on the off-season, or are there just not many tourists around?

I didn’t even know people vacationed in Cuba! Thanks for sharing 🙂

I love this honest review! And props to you for keeping an open mind on expectations when traveling with a toddler!

Great, honest write up. Is it expensive to travel to Cuba? How does it compare to other islands and resorts in the same area?

Thank you for your honest review. It is very helpful for travellers who may be considering this resort. A couple of questions for you: how old is the resort and when was the last renovation, and how far is it for the airport and is a hotel shuttle included? Thank you.

absolutely stunning. except for the cigs on the beach… we have that same issue in the LA area. I wonder how bad it has to be before people start realizing how gross it is

I know right?! the problem also is with the culture and upbringing of the people who do that. In British Columbia for example, even one cig is not acceptable at the beach. not a single plastic bottle dropped on a hiking trail… that’s much to do with the attitude of the people and with local green living propaganda. whereas people travelling to Cuba now are from countries that sadly do not have any eco-education or sustainability awareness….

I enjoyed reading about your stay. I especially appreciated your honesty about your experience. What was your favorite kid-friendly activity- since the dance night was so lacking?

kids-friendly activity? the Beach of course! My son would have spent every minute at the beach if he could! Had to drag him away from the sun as you know how strong the sun is in Cuba. And we used a lot of sun screen – only natural, organic chemical-free of course so we don’t harm the marine life. I’ve done a post on natural sunscreen some time ago 🙂

Wow , you have a very thorough review! What activities for kids are there besides the beach?

Thank you. this particular hotel had kids club and a games room. we’ve used games room a few times and there was always an attendant there happy to help. loved this. but the kids party… well you’ve read it 🙂 oh yes, they had a shallow pool too for little kids fun.

I guess if I asked a question It would be was you at all nervous being there?

absolutely NOT! we love Cuba very much! even though it is drowning in poverty and you need to know what to expect in terms of products, food and services, the people are one of the most kind-hearted people I’ve ever met, and the country itself is one of the safest places on earth!

absolutely not! I love Cuba and I love going there! If I was to choose a place to retire – Cuba has a serious shot 🙂

Loved all the pictures. And great detail review of your stay. I love the red bucket challenge. If I am every near the beach I am for sure going to partake in that. I am a paleo eater with a lot of restrictive diet needs, if I eat something I am not supposed to I get really ill. They seemed pretty accommodating, and you said the food is basic, are they good at following diet restrictions? This is why I don’t travel to a lot of exotic places because of this. Which is hard, I used to be very adventurous in my foods.

I would not count on the hotel staff/supplies for any diet restrictions. they may want to help, but sometimes the simply do not have a choice – the produce and food options are very limited due to embargo. not the best place to go if you have allergies or if you follow a certain diet – you have to fend for yourself there

Looks interesting. Would you go back there? Did you feel safe outside of the resort? Besides the beach, what was your favorite activity there?

Yes absolutely! I’ve been to Cuba many times. I’d prefer to try out another resort though 🙂 Safety-wise, Cuba is one of the safest countries – especially in the resort areas. You can walk outside even solo-female in the middle of the night with no serious danger of anything happening.

Very helpful and informative post about Cuba! I am used to powdered milk at home in the Philippines growing up. Although we have some cows in the Philippines and fresh milk but it is different taste here in the US. My kids love milk but wouldn’t even try to have a sip of the fresh milk in the Philippines. You made me missed those kind of milk. I better try to find one in some Asian store here in the US.

I love the pictures you shared here and the 3-5 star hotel comparison is a plus. Thanks

So hows the culture and how your child adopt it?

My son loooved interacting with Cuban people – as everyone is super-friendly especially towards little kids. I taught Cosmos some basic Spanish, so he was comfortable saying hi/bye and ordering milk, juice and water at the bar 🙂

This looks like it could be a nice place to visit..thank you for you honesty about the trash a cigarettes and trash on the beach!

thank you for your kind words, and yes the trash and cigarette buds all over the beach was a quite upsetting picture to witness…

The pictures of the resort and beach are beautiful! I’m glad you had a good time. You did mention that you eat low carb. Were there many gluten-free options? Were there sand buckets and toys available for the kids?

thank you, to answer your questions:
– we do not necessarily eat low carb, just removed processed sugar and grains from our diet. Otherwise, we eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, and of course meats and seafood of all sorts. There were plenty of seafood options, a decent amount of cheese, and a fair amount of vegetables offered. However, in Cuba you shouldn’t be expecting “gluten-free” or “vegan” post notes on the food packaging or at a buffet. Good news, the food is simple and what you see is typically what you get.
– Sand buckets and Toys – bring your own. There were no toys/buckets provided at the resort, nor there are many shopping opportunities in Cuba thanks to the embargo. We brought many things with us knowing we won’t likely get those here nor did we want to spend time searching. I will be posting a “packing list” for Cuba soon, so you can see what you should bring with you 🙂

Thank you so much for providing such a detailed review. I think a lot of times people have unreasonable/uninformed expectations when visiting Cuba and this article does an amazing job setting the record straight. Your pictures and review of the Starfish Resort show that the resort is very well kept and has a lot to offer. Will definitely review review this article next time I plan a trip to Cuba!

thank you for the kind words 🙂 You’ll have a blast I am sure! I am putting out more Cuban notes – about Havana and Jaimanitas – in the next week. hope you enjoy those too!

Wow, so much to see and do! The food looks great too. I was wondering if any of the pools or beaches have a lifeguard on duty?

Angela, yes absolutely! they have two lifeguard stations on the beach and one at each pool. The beach ones are quite fierce too – especially watching little kids. and if the sea waves are a bit high, they won’t let you get your kids into the ocean past their chest level. this standard of care is quite refreshing!

The resort and Cuba look so amazing. You wrote beautifully about both. Love the idea of the red bucket challenge. I live in a beach town in Florida and it’s sad how much garbage gets left on the beaches.

yes indeed, it is quite sad. I will be making a separate “Red Bucket Challenge” post and will try to spread it through Social Media, hopefully it catches on and our beaches become cleaner
