Applebarn Pumpkin Farm by Taves Family

Applebarn Pumpkin Farm is located about an hour's drive from Vancouver in Abbotsford. Applebarn owners, the Taves Family have been farming here for over 80 years. In the 1930s, as many local farmers, they started small with apple orchards. Three generations later the Taves Family operation expanded to growing corn, pumpkins, goji berries, sunflowers and even having their own beehive!
Today Applebarn is a family agritourism attraction very popular with local families. Rightfully so as the farm has so much to offer, and is one of the quintessential fall experiences a family can enjoy.
U-pick apple picking, pumpkin patch, corn maze & carting, hayrides, petting barn, convenient amenities and a concession stand serving freshly cooked farm produce… If you have kids (and even if you do not!), you can easily spend an entire day here!

Our Visit to Applebarn
We’ve visited Applebarn Pumpkin Farm the last weekend of September. Our main goal was to enjoy the u-pick apple picking experience not too far from Vancouver. This was our 3yo Cosmos’ first visit to a real farm. On arrival at Applebarn, he was blown away by the variety of activities and fun things to do! We did u-pick apples eventually, but as a waaaaay an afterthought then.

.
Farm Attractions
Yes, we ended up spending more than half a Saturday at the Applebarn. I’m posting the whole list of attractions that were offered at the Farm this season.
We’ve enjoyed all of them, with the exception of pony rides (closed due to heavy wind).
- U-Pick Apples
- Pumpkin Patch
- Corn Maze
- Pedal Karts through the cornfield
- Hay Rides
- Tractor Trail
- Pumpkin cannon & corn gun
- Jumping Pillows
- Playground & Slides
- Petting Barn & Farmville
- Bunny Town
- Bee Hive Viewing Window
- Cider Press Demonstrations
- Pony Rides
- Concession Stand
.
Pumpkin Patch
Applebarn's pumpkin patch is located at the far end of the farm. It is of course possible to walk there. Yet moms with younger kids will appreciate a lift via a Hayride!

We got lucky as the day we visited the weather was sunny and beautiful. The countryside colours turned out to be so vibrant, almost magical like from the pages of storybooks. Our 3yo Cosmos practiced his photography skills at the pumpkin patch with iPhone 6. In our opinion his photos turned out to be quite lovely: all the photos of ladybugs are done by Cosmos. Check those out!

Applebarn's Corn Maze
Our absolute favourite attraction at Applebarn turned out to be the Corn Maze. At some point we got so lost, that had to turn on GPS on our phone to figure out which direction to start moving to get out! The experience of feeling lost in a corn maze, a strong wind blowing across the corn tops, was completely extraterrestrial and out of this Word!

Karting through Corn Field
And if Corn Maze wasn't enough, you can have fun karting through that corn field! So much fun!

.
.
U-Pick Apples
We could not leave from Applebarn Farm without bringing home some delicious local apples, could we? We're happy that Applebarn provides kids with awesome u-pick opportunity. I had to actually stop Cosmos at some point, as over 4 bags of apples was already too much to carry!

.
Jumping Pillow Trampoline
After all the rides are ridden and apples picked, our 3yo Cosmos got “glued” to the giant jumping pillow! We've probably spent a good half hour pretending to be a bunny, a kangaroo, and simply being silly! Jumping pillows are super-fun and much safer than trampolines. Loved that Taves Family placed not just one, but two huge jumping pillows on the Applebarn Farm. Many adults both dads (expected) and moms (completely unexpected) were spotted giving it a try! hahaha!

Petting Barn and Farmville
Taves fam'ly had a farm, yee-ah-yee-ah-oh. Goats here! Goats there! Goats everywhere!

What makes Farmville fun for kids, is the opportunity to personally interact with animals. Moms can purchase pet food, and kids can feed goats, ducks and bunnies. So much fun!

Visit Tips & Directions
We strongly advise planning your visit as Applebarn gets very busy at times. In addition to this agritourism attraction being open to the public, Taves Family organizes school tours and group visits. Check out their WEBSITE before you decide to go to confirm they are open, daily schedule and fees.
Directions
If you are heading to Applebarn Pumpkin Farm from Coquitlam Centre, it will take you about 45 minutes to get there.
Parking

Applebarn Farm is a very popular attraction, most families visiting on weekends. Parking is a challenge. What we did not know however that Applebarn has two parking lots! If you are driving from Vancouver, the first parking lot may look extremely busy. But you should drive forward and check out the second parking lot before opting in to park on a side road.
.
Fees
A visit to Applebarn Pumpkin Farm is not entirely free. Yes, you can come in and enjoy u-pick apple picking, pumpkin patch and the Country store free of admission (while only paying for the products you take with you), the rest of the fun attractions are paid fun.
Nevertheless, we could tell that the Taves Family understands and cares for families with kids. A simple fact that they offer a reasonable family pass, that includes 2 adults and 2 or more kids from the same household, makes it possible for larger families to enjoy the Applebarn adventure on a budget.
If you plan your visit as a larger group, you may arrange for a group tour. If you want to visit a few times during a season – Taves Family has a season’s pass for you.
Check Applebarn’s WEBSITE before your visit to confirm rates.

.
Bathrooms
One last note on visiting with kids if you are a solo parent. Bathrooms available to the public are the bio-washroom booths that are completely unsuitable to younger kids. I have been by myself with 3yo Cosmos, and could not take him in with me, and at the same time, the idea of leaving him outside by himself if only for 2 minutes was terrifying! Asking a stranger to look after him wasn’t acceptable either. We figured it out eventually, but please be warned.
We do recommend visiting Applebarn in groups with other parents, grandparents, or older kids so someone can keep an eye on your little one while you are using the bathroom-booth.
.
.
Concluding Notes
A huge “Thank you!” to the Taves family for creating this A-mazing adventure for kids! We will definitely be back to do more u-pick apples and maybe even u-pick pumpkins before the season is over. We had a blast!
