Tip 1 – Travel Locally

It is proven that travel with your kids can help your family become stronger, more attached, smarter and overall happier. Interestingly, you do not have to leave your country! Local travel by car, bus or train is one way of getting the benefits travel brings. Road trips are also a great way of saving money on travel! Many times when you go on a local road trip, your accommodation costs can be next to nothing! You may make it a day trip, or you may stay overnight for just one night either at a local campground or at your friends’ cabin. Isn't it amazing how having friends with a cabin can help your family to travel on a budget, eh?!

When you travel close to home you can also easily take advantage of off-season rates and last-minute rates, special last-minute promotions. …and if you are a blogger or an influencer – many local businesses will be happy to comp your admission in exchange for an opportunity to be promoted via your channel.

Our family has a rule – we go on a road trip or a hiking trip every single weekend – rain or shine. We explore local attractions, outdoor activities, hiking trails, museums – you won’t believe how much Vancouver has to offer! We were able to discover places such as Mt. Seymour, Othello Tunnels, Jurassic Ridge, Kamui Mintara, Surrey Heritage Rail, Great Blue Heron Reserve, Atchelitz Pioneer Village, Honeybee Centre, Gold Creek Falls, Applebarn Pumpkin Farm, many easy kids-friendly hikes, and also tons of fun things to do with kids on a rainy day

We use TripAdvisor and AllTrails mobile app to research and plan itineraries filled with all the activities and experiences we’ve never done or rarely heard of. You may be surprised how many cool new places open up every year, and how many existing ones may be off your radar! Many new places offer cheap travel deals to get awareness and attract tourists. It is hard to not take advantage of these deals!

Here are more tips for you on how to save money on a road trip. Oh.. and don't forget that there is always a way to find FREE camping sites!

.

Tip 2 – Be Flexible

You can often save a lot of money on flights if you arrive or leave a day earlier or later, or choose a connecting flight. You can also be saving money on travel if you book your vacation package to leave mid-week. For example, the best deals we’ve seen to travel to the Caribbean from Canada depart on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Flexible may also mean to shop for a trip without a specific destination in mind. You can save big time and significantly lower your travel budget if you are flexible on your destination. A beach is a beach, regardless if it is in Florida or Thailand. “Swimming with dolphins” experience is the same regardless if it is done in Mexico or Turkey.

I love seeing search engines allowing you to select “All South” or “All Europe” within your search! Also, check out the Groupon sites to see what you can do within your travel budget.

.

Tip 3 – Off-Season & Shoulder Cheap Travel

Some of the best savings can be realized and cheap travel found when the weather may be less than ideal, kids are in school, you are not planning your travel over the Christmas season, March break or late summer when most people are taking their vacations. Shoulder season is almost as good – just before or just after the busy season when the weather is already/still beautiful, but the crowds are smaller and as a result – prices are lower.

Frequent travelers can often tell travel trends and adjust their travel budgets accordingly. Some of the most known world trends are:

  • Visiting Europe in July and August is… a bad idea as the whole of Europe is taking vacations and most are traveling locally to the Mediterranean. The best time for Europe may probably be either May or September.
  • Prices to Australia and New Zealand skyrocket between November and late January, as firstly it is their summer, and secondly, most of the Aussies and Kiwis working in Europe like to fly “home” for 4-6 weeks over Christmas.
  • You’ll likely find it difficult to find budget accommodations within the Caribbean, Mexico, Florida, Cuba, and Hawaii in mid-March, as most of the USA and Canada have March break and are taking their “away from winter” time.
  • Want to visit the famous Banff and Jasper national parks in Alberta, Canada? If you are looking at July or August, you’ll have to book a year in advance and pay a premium.

Knowing the destination trends will definitely help you saving money on travel, plan some of the most amazing vacation travel on a budget, and to keep more money in your pocket to use for even more future trips!

Tip 4 – Check out Nearby Smaller Airports

When looking for a flight, include nearby airports into your search. Smaller airports typically have much lower airport fees, cheaper long term parking, fewer crowds and as a result less waiting times everywhere from security checks to boarding gates.

Luckily most travel search engines allow you to include both flexible dates and nearby airports in your search.

If you are planning to rent a car at the destination – smaller airports may have much lower car rental fees and offer cheap travel deals too! All of these travel savings can significantly add up, and all you have to do is to add an extra 30 minutes up to an hour to a nearby smaller city.

Great example from our recent travel – flying from Vancouver to Toronto, Canada.
Instead of choosing large international airports of Vancouver (YVR) and Toronto (YYZ), we’ve opted to fly from Abbotsford to Hamilton.
Long term parking alone $9/day in Abbotsford vs. $20/day in Vancouver. Both airfare and car rental resulted in over 25% cost savings when we chose Abbotsford-Hamilton option over Vancouver-Toronto!
Time travel between Hamilton airport and Toronto Pearson airport – 45 min, however we’ve actually saved time due to shorter security check lines, baggage wait times, car rental check-in and much less traffic getting out of the airport! (2019)

Choosing a nearby smaller airport can help you reduce your costs significantly in so many ways! It is a great way of saving money on all sorts of travel arrangements, and even gives you some precious time back! So next time when you are working on your travel budget, do look around for smaller airports offering cheap travel deals!

.

Tip 5 – Kitchen “Advantage”

Food is one of the easiest ways to save money when you travel, especially if you travel with kids. This way you are in control over breakfast times, late evening snacks, tea & coffee breaks. Yes, it is fun to eat out at a destination to get better familiarized with the local culture. But let’s be honest – when you need coffee in the morning, it does not really matter if it is a $1 coffee or $5 coffee – coffee is coffee.

In addition, if you are anything like us, traveling with a picky “plain pasteritta” toddler can be challenging. You’ll be wasting money on your family travel budget time and time again buying expensive meals for the little one who wants his breakfast “kasha” just the same way as you do it every day at home!

You can buy food at a local grocery store (more local culture!), and even bring your toddler food with you in a suitcase.

If you are not familiar with local stores, technology to the rescue! In many places in North America, such mobile apps as Instacart can deliver groceries to your door within 2 hours.

Few places where you can find full kitchens:

  • AirBnB – book “Entire Place” or a shared room with access to a kitchen.
  • Booking.com – look for a condo or vacation rental apartment complexes with the kitchen.
  • Depending on the destination, you can look up a local website that offers short term vacation rentals with full kitchens

Tip 6 – Saving Money on Pre- Travel Shopping

Another hidden area of potentially huge cost savings is your family pre-travel shopping. Often you do not need to bring everything with you in a suitcase. This is especially true when planning to visit a destination that is different from your home location. Many times you can buy everything you need locally on arrival.

Here is a lesson learned from our recent trip from Canada to Hawaii.

Beach Vacation Gear Savings – Personal Story
Our pre-travel shopping list included bikini, swim-wear, snorkeling equipment, fins and floaties + sand toys for our toddler.
February and March are usually off-season for Vancouver summer-shopping, and local specialized stores would have your bikini available at a premium. Luckily, we’ve done our research.
Upon arrival to Maui, at a Walmart just 10 min from the airport, we were able to purchase all needed swimwear, beach gear and snorkeling gear we needed at under a fraction of a cost that winter Amazon delivery service would have cost us in Vancouver. Since Hawaii “specializes in Summer” all year round – there was much more choice of styles and brands too!
What a great help to our travel budget!

The pre-travel shopping strategy only works when you know your destination can satisfy your needs. On our next trip to Cuba this upcoming month, for example, we will be bringing everything with us as we know that we won’t likely be able to purchase much locally.

.

Tip 7 – Souvenirs & Gifts Travel Budget

Beware though that the destination shopping can quickly get out of hand if you do not have a firm grip on your planned expenses. It is always a good idea to set your souvenir budget before the trip. We recommend using cash for the purpose, as credit cards do not offer the same spent-awareness as hard cash affords.

Get the cash-out, and distribute the same amount to every member of your household. This way kids can get an extra benefit of practicing preparing and managing a travel budget. Let them know they do not have to spend all the money and can keep leftovers to spend any way they want at home, and see what happens 🙂  Chances are they quickly learn how to find cheap travel deals and not waste money on souvenirs at a touristy location!

Everyone in our family is a firm believer in creating memories and keeping photos as the best souvenirs. We do not typically buy and bring home “stuff”. Instead whatever leftover souvenir money we have, we typically donate two a local charity (eg. saving whales or restoring coral reefs) or bring home to invest into the next trip.

.

Tip 8 – Credit Card Benefits

A smart way of planning your vacation, and a way of saving money on travel, is to learn what travel benefits you ALREADY have.

Many times you can redeem rewards points to partially pay for your flights (or even book flights for free!!!), car rentals, hotels, get meal vouchers, hotel and flight upgrades, access to airport lounges, and more.

Do you have credit cards with travel benefits or rewards points? Look up what you have and use the rewards in preparing your travel budget!

One interesting strategy we’ve used in the past: you can switch the type of your credit card within the same bank about a month before your travel to take advantage of the perks and benefits.

Here is an example:
You are planning to take a trip in a month or two and are looking for medical insurance & planning to use car rental at a destination.
Let’s say you have a Cash Back credit card through your bank.
That same bank offers another type of credit card with travel perks included – call the bank and switch your card type. In most cases, they will not need to do any credit check provided you are an existing client in good standing. They will simply and quickly switch the card type over the phone, reissue and mail out the actual card to you within 3-5 weeks.
In some cases, especially if that travel card is under a current promotion, they may even wave the annual fee to entice you to try out that new card type.
The new travel card may have the theft and damage car rental insurance, flight and luggage delay, out of country/state/province medical protection, and even complimentary access to the airport lounge!
Tah-dahhh! You just unlocked cheap travel opportunity!

Tip 9 – Brand Points, Rewards, Perks

Are you signed up with the brand points program? Eg. Air Miles, Aeroplan, Marriott Bonvoy, Miles & More?

Did you know you can transfer the points between some airline and hotel brands within the same alliance? Eg. StarAlliance.

Other places you can get hidden travel deals from:

  • Does your place of employment offer travel benefits and discounts for popular destinations and travel brands as an employee perk?
  • Do you have any professional memberships?
  • Are there any students or retirees traveling with you? Make sure they bring their Student IDs.

It is always a good idea to keep track of all benefits, points, perks, and rewards you ALREADY have and USE those at any convenient occasion to get cheap travel. Some people prefer to collect and stock-up on points, only to find out their company discontinues the rewards program or devalued the number of points required to purchase an experience.

Our family keeps a habit of redeeming points and rewards towards prepaid non-expiring Visa cards to be used at a later date at our convenience.

.

Tip 10 – Memberships

Here is a Best Kept Secret Hack to add cheap travel deals to your itinerary! Honestly, we did not know about this till last year!

Do you have a membership to a local association or museum?  Did you know that having a local membership to an association or a museum will help you saving money on travel?

Many museums and zoos belong to associations, and offer free or discounted admission to families with annual memberships to your local museums or zoos in that same association. What a wonderful thing to know when preparing your travel budget and itinerary!

Great example: if you are a member of Canadian Museum of Flight (Langley, Canada; cost in 2019 was around $52 CAD/year for a family), you’ll automatically get free admission to the Museum of Flight (Seattle, WA), West Coast Railway Museum (Squamish, BC), Canadian Military Education Centre (Chilliwack, BC). Why is this significant?  Museum of Flight in Seattle alone admission cost is $22 USD per person per visit!

So one trick we use anytime we travel is: we look-up attractions we want to visit, look up the admission costs, look up any associations these are a part of, and look for local attractions within the same association. Sign-up for family membership locally, and voila – free admission to both international and local attractions all year round!

Tip 11 – Buy Insurance

When you travel, especially with kids, insurance should be mandatory. We always hope for the best but should be prepared for the worst. In the end, you’ll find you’ll save more on the “peace of mind” even if you end up not needing the insurance at all. Therefore our advice is – do not be cheap when it comes to travel insurance!

The statement equally applies to both – property insurance and medical insurance alike. Let me share a quick personal story to illustrate my point.

Emergency Travel Medical Insurance – Personal Story

Since we had our son Cosmos (who is not 3.5yo), the emergency health insurance is non-negotiable – we are always buying insurance ahead of time. There is one specific occasion I recall we were happy we had the medical insurance.

In 2016, when Cosmos was just 11 months old, we traveled to Mexico for a friend's wedding. Two days before departure Cosmos woke up with mild fever. Although there were no other symptoms, we've decided to check it out with the hotel medical clinic. There were no doctors on-site, just nurses and they did not feel qualified to assist with an infant baby, so they referred us to local hospital. Confirming with us we had medical insurance, hotel nurse called an ambulance; and after a quick 7-min drive we've arrived at hospital.

Cosmos was quickly seen by doctors, assessed, tested and released with no serious diagnosis. He was fine the next day. Hospital staff took our insurance information and told us they'll take care of the paperwork. The whole hospital experience took probably no more than an hour. We were happy to continue with our vacation.

Imagine our surprise when we got an insurance statement few weeks after coming home – this quick hospital visit totaled to almost $3,000 USD in charges! The 7-minute ambulance ride alone was listed at $650 USD. I mean, wow. We were so soooo happy we had it all covered by the insurance company!

Family travel to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico - do not be cheap on travel insurance
Playa del Carmen, Mexico – enjoying the vacation instead of worrying about medical fees!

On another occasion we’ve scratched a rental car. Not much, just a little bit. But the insurance company covered almost $1,500 CAD in fixing it. We, on the other hand, did not need to spend a dime above the insurance premium, nor what’s more important, we did not have to spend valuable vacation time dealing with a stressful situation!

I hope I’ve convinced you that buying insurance actually SAVES you money and this expense must be added to your travel budget!

.

Tip 12 – Save on Insurance

A great strategy to be saving even more money on travel is to know what insurance coverage you ALREADY have. This way you may not need to pay top dollar for the premium package – and only select the travel insurance add-ons you do not yet have.

Does your credit card offer travel insurance benefits, such as emergency medical, flight delay, trip interruption, car rental? Does your home or auto insurance cover theft or damage to car rentals? You may not need to buy that extra coverage at all! This existing insurance may significantly help your travel budget.

Important note on MEDICAL: if you are a Canadian resident, some provinces' universal healthcare plans, for example, OHIP in Ontario, will actually cover you across the whole country and even out of the country. However residents of other provinces such as British Columbia, are not so lucky – MSP does not cover any out of province care (2019).

.

Tip 13 – Coupon Books

One of the best ways to find cheap travel deals we've found are, same old, Coupon Books.

Upon arrival to a destination, the first thing you should do is to check out local tourism offices to pick up coupon books and flyers to get discounts for dining, entertainment, and attractions.

You can get one of these books at any hotel too – just go to the Concierge Desk and ask for one. What we’ve learned over the years, you do not have to be staying at that hotel at all – just walk in and get to the Concierge Desk. Don’t worry, many hotels are very busy, with hundreds and thousands of travelers coming and going every night and the Concierge staff working shifts – they can not possibly remember every guest!

Many destinations will have those flyer-stands all around – including at local restaurants and even simply on the street.

Another way to get discounts is to sign-up for electronic coupons aka book programs available throughout North America and many European countries. One such program that is very popular around Vancouver is Entertainment Coupon Book –  a membership program that features hundreds of two-for-one and discount coupons at Vancouver attractions, restaurants, and stores. It covers both: the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, some international locations too. Best thing: they now offer coupons via a mobile app! The book is a wonderful resource for family savings all year round, and especially days with less than ideal weather.

Membership is about $20/year only, but you get the discounts and coupons right into the mobile app on your phone! One trip to a restaurant and you already made up for it in discounts – no need to stretch your travel budget!

Tip 14 – Groupon Sites

Groupon and Groupon-like sites often offer deals that will definitely help you saving money on travel and entertainment. Yet sometimes these cheap travel deals feel too good to be true. Things you have to watch out for when booking attractions and experiences on Groupon are hidden fees, blackout dates, and expiration dates. Read the fine print and ask questions, as well as read the reviews from past purchasers.

It is ok to pre-plan, pre-book and pre-purchase your experiences when planning your travel budget. You have to remember however that with Groupon you pay-in-full at the time of booking and most times your purchase is non-refundable. So if your plans change, you or your child gets sick, the weather is not the best for that outdoor experience – you are likely at a loss. So the cheap travel deal is not cheap after all…

The way our family uses Groupon, and we suggest you follow suit: we always book experiences last minute when we know 100% that we can make it and the experience is indeed what we really want. Sometimes we can find even more savings and even much cheaper travel deals this way, as attractions and entertainment services are desperate to sell out last minute!

.

Tip 15 – iVisa

You will be surprised how many countries still require a visitor VISA for a Canadian or an American passport holder. The latest stats for Canadians – 30+ countries require us to obtain a visa prior to arrival. Yes, both India and China are among those who do require a visa!

One of the ways to save BIG on both time and money – is to process your international visa application via an automated service, such as iVisa. Firstly, they are professionals dealing with hundreds and thousands of applications on a regular basis who know all ins and outs – they'll be the best to advise you on the visa requirements and dos/donts for your application.

iVisa.com

Secondly, you'll save BIG time if you can avoid the need to travel to a neighboring state or even a neighboring country to attend the embassy appointment. Services such as iVisa will save you in both: travel expenses and time lost from work. I think it is amazing they exist!

.

Tip 16 – Free WiFi

Let’s face it: the internet connection is increasingly becoming a necessity rather than a perk. We use the internet for everything from navigating unfamiliar streets, to translating languages, to booking attractions. When traveling abroad, your roaming fees may quickly sky-rocket! Best about many places in North America and Europe: you can easily find and take advantage of free WiFi. In your hotel, in libraries and coffee shops, sometimes even on the bus or ferry you are taking.

We are happy to report: there are mobile apps out that help you find free WiFi. WiFi Map is just one such app we use all the time!

One of the strategies we are using when traveling, we pre-load our phones and laptops with music, movies, and books so we don’t have to hammer on our data plans while streaming Spotify or Netflix.

Our phone providers also have convenient and reasonable data plans that can accommodate everything else – make sure to check with your provider before you embark on your journey. Sometimes however a local prepaid pay-as-you-go data card can even be a better option!

BONUS: Tip 17 – “Win a Trip” Contests and Sweepstakes

There is no doubt, everyone loves cheap travel!

The biggest and best way of saving money on travel is to get a FREE trip all expenses paid!!! There are many deals and promotions on all the time where the grand prize is a couple or a family trip with all expenses paid. One of my friends has won a family trip to Madeira, Portugal this way not so long ago – they do indeed exist.

However, you have to be careful and on the lookout for scammers. Unfortunately, these guys are plenty too.

You might receive a call one day advising you that you won a beach vacation or a cruise! Hooray!
..but then the caller starts asking you all the personal questions such as your name, address, and even your social insurance number! They may even tell you that although the trip itself is free, you have to prepay taxes and fees.
Even if the amount sounds small DO NOT give out your personal data or your credit card over the phone!

We recommend that before you answer any questions you take down the name, phone number and position of the caller, and the company or brand that they are representing. Ask them which brand campaign have you entered to win this trip. If you do not remember entering that contest, and/or you are asked to pay anything out of pocket – this may well be a scam. Ask for the office location you can come by to accept your prize, or to send you the information by mail.

We do however wholeheartedly wish you to win a big trip one day!

Too many people overlook the importance of travel insurance until it’s too late.
