Why Facebook Groups Are Great To Travel Blog Promotion

Facebook Groups are an excellent way to promote a travel blog.  For a beginner blogger, I would argue Travel and Blogging groups are one of the best ways to spread the word and get your posts some attention.

Groups of people looking at the sunset. Facebook Groups for Travel Blog Promotion.

.

More Readership

When you post your article into a targeted niche group, it’s likely going to get read by more people than if you simply posted it to your personal timeline.

Firstly, unless you are comfortable having your Facebook Profile completely public, only your friends will be able to see your timeline posts. Secondly, in a niche Facebook group, you get the audience that is genuinely interested in your topic.

.

More Collaboration

One of the main reasons I absolutely love some of the Facebook Groups I am a member of is that they connect you to fellow travel bloggers and create community. It is much easier to find a collaboration partner, exchange links, build up your own SEO.

I can also see more and more Brands and Media Agencies joining groups and “hunting for” travel bloggers and travel influencers to promote their products and events – which is absolutely awesome!

.

More Engagement

Many blogging groups on Facebook have regular reciprocation-based engagement threads. There are usually have rules about reciprocation and encourage members to share your blog posts and social media profiles through other social media platforms (such as Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube and more).

.

More Blogging Support & Resources

By joining Facebook Groups of fellow bloggers, you can exchange blogging experience, ask questions and get support about challenges you’re facing with your own blog. There are many blogging communities, focused both on the general topic of blogging and on social media platform-specific topics. Here you can quickly get help, get introduced to ideas, engage in online training, discover podcasts and find tools.

Another way to boost your blog post traffic is through the use of social media automation and scheduling tools. Here are links to my posts on this topic:

Blogging Definitions Refresher

Before we go into the details on how to use Facebook Groups, let me refresh you on most commonly used definitions:

  • DA – Domain Authority
  • PA – Page Authority
  • SEO – Search Engine Optimization
  • Link Swap or “link swapping” is when one blogger puts a link to another blogger’s website in one of their posts and that blogger reciprocates in another blog post. The more of your own blog links you have on other websites, the more likely it is that people will find your blog. It’s also very good for SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  • Link-dropping – this refers to posting a link to your blog or social media account or post on the wall of a Facebook Group without any particular reason, and sometimes no comment. Aka “no one asked for it”.
  • Click-through – when you post a link to your blog, and another group member is expected to go to your article, stay for a bit, click on any other article and then share on social media (any channel). More of this happens = better SEO for your blog.
  • Collab or Collaboration means someone decided to construct an article from “bricks” from other bloggers. There are typically summary posts, eg. Top 10 Destinations to Visit This Summer. You can contribute a paragraph or two on a particular destination and have links to your own blog added. Depending on the number of bloggers collaborating on the post, this could be good for SEO (the smaller the number the better)

.

.

Facebook Groups’ Membership Requirements & Rules

There are many Travel Facebook groups out there that are further “niche outed” and have specific requirements to join. For example, groups can be targeted towards women-only travel, solo travel, family travel, travel with kids, geo-targeted (eg. British Columbia Outdoors), digital nomads, travel bloggers, parent bloggers, outdoor bloggers, etc.

Before joining, you’ll have to answer a set of questions to be allowed to join. Please answer truthfully.

Each Facebook group has its own rules on what and when you can post. Some groups are actively moderated, some are peer-reviewed and some have spot-checks.

You can find Rules in the About section of most groups, either listed or within the group description.

Facebook group rules - about section

Otherwise, some Admins can post their Travel Facebook Group rules as an “Announcement” – so make sure to check out those too.

Facebook group rules - announcement section

For most Reciprocation-based engagement threads the rules will be listed within the thread itself: aka like-for-like and repost-for-repost. The post will clearly say what’s allowed for posting, when all the reciprocations must be completed by and what you have to do: eg, all-or-nothing, any 5 links, etc.

.

So, before joining a Facebook Group, be sure to match the requirements and read all the group rules very carefully.

You can be muted, and even banned and removed from a group if the rules are not followed. ..and I must say, it would really suck to be banned by accident simply because you didn’t read the group rules carefully.

We’d love to share the fb group with some friends here

Absolutely, what is the facebook group you want to share?

I will be starting my new blog, will soon be applying what you mentioned in this write up, will update you here in the comments.

Very nice article for those who still use Facebook. Personally, I left Facebook some years ago, and today only use Twitter and Instagram – even though I do know Facebook owns Instagram today…

I blog about France on my blog linked to in this comment, and I do recommend people consider having blogs off SoMe-sites, since you CAN get into trouble once a media such as Facebook shuts down your account. If you have put all eggs into one basket, this could literally shut you down with a lot of content lost…

But thanks for an interesting overview of FB-groups. Highly useful for many. 🙂

Hi Herik, thank you for your comment. I absolutely agree with you that social media is not a winner in terms of traffic and readers, however presence on social media is important for validation. I personally try to automate as much as possible on social media (read my More Time For Fun – Social Media Automation for Travel Bloggers).
Otherwise my blogging toolkit includes: self-hosted wordpress blog, SEO, Pinterest (for search engine purposes), and recently – our own PerfectDayToPlay YouTube channel. + trying to figure out email lists now 🙂
