Day of The Honeybee Event
On June 1st, 2019 the centre opened doors with Day of The Honeybee – a cool event full of kids activities both indoor and outdoor. Beekeeping demonstrations, educational workshops, crafts and games for kids, face painting, flower planting, hot dog and bbq party in the Community Bee Garden, you name it! Of all the things to do with kids in Surrey BC on that day, the Honeybee centre event rocked!
Our family visited for the very first time, and we are happy we came. We absolutely loved how much the centre is kids and family-oriented, all ages can find fun in learning.
Learning About Bees
FACT: Our whole family literally got honey-glued to the glass-open beehive, watching bees come and go and work on their honeycomb, and doing their other bee activities “on camera”! You can find this wonderful smart experience right inside the honeybee store. Best thing – they have more fun indoor kids activities there: from books to puzzles to posters.
.
We then watched how the baby-bees are being born, and what happens to the bee parents. Honeybee centre staff was the most knowledgeable, explained all the phases and steps bees are going through in their lives.
Cosmos especially enjoyed the Flowers & Bees presentation at the community room.
He rushed to the garden to plant his own little sunflower right after using the staff-provided equipment. Then our little one asked to go to the store to buy more seeds and plant a flower garden at home so bees can come live with us! Of all bee activities, Cosmos definitely enjoyed planing the most! We did take our new “flower garden” home 🙂
Over the lunchtime we've enjoyed the outdoor musical performance in the community garden, while Cosmos alongside other kids, was well-occupied constructing his very own honeycomb.
.
Honeybee Store & Gift Shop
Of course, we could not leave the Honeybee Centre without a sweet treat! Honeybee Store & Gift Shop sells raw honey from its honey bee farm. The hardest thing was to make a choice of what to get in the store – so many amazing delicious options! Decided to try-out the speciality cinnamon-infused honey spread – yummm.
Alongside the sweets, the store offers a good selection of healthy and nutritional products, natural care products, and of course the bee wax candles.
Honeybee Centre gift-shop was officially added to our list of eco-friendly stores for shopping!
.
Bee Education and Workshops
Among all the indoor activities for kids, we always prefer smart ones where our son can learn through play.
The Honeybee Centre offers a wide variety of bee education programs for all ages: from school trips to junior beekeeper home-learner classes to fun DIY projects to group presentations and workshops. Want to learn more about honey bee farm and even participate in bee farm activities hands-on?! Then the Honeybee Centre is perfect for you! You can check-out bee centre's Event Calendar HERE to learn about upcoming events and bee education workshops.
.
BEEstro – Honeybee Centre Cafe
The Honeybee Centre has recently added a cafe – Fry's Corner BEEstro (clever name, right?) where the whole family can enjoy a delicious High Tea! Oh… we just love high teas! Unlike other places, the beestro serves high tea all week long – Mon-Sun 10am-5pm.
If you haven't already, we strongly recommend to check it out!

A Note on Sustainability
Regretfully, more and more natural habitats for bees are disappearing. This happens largely due to rapid urbanization, but also due to global pollution crisis and climate change. As a result, honeybees struggle to survive and are in danger. Honeybees have an important place in natural cycles, and without them, entire eco-systems can be threatened to vanish.
In our opinion, it is extremely important to introduce your children to the topic of sustainability, make them environmentally aware, teach them the reduce-reuse-recycle concepts early. Where do you start? Here are a few suggestions:
