What should I write about today?

What should I write about today? is a question I asked myself many times.

You may be an experienced travel blogger and you feel like you’ve written literally about everything! What ELSE can I write about on my travel blog? Sometimes you just run out of topics to talk about and ideas completely… Not a nice problem to have, right? In this case, the best strategy is to simply start journaling, and the next great blog post ideas will follow for sure! Luckily it is easy to find some great journal prompts online to get you to start writing sooner than later 🙂

But more often, the reason you feel stuck is that you have TOO MANY travel blog post ideas! You may have followed the advice of more seasoned bloggers and were writing down every single idea you’ve ever had. Now you are looking at the longest list ever and trying to decide what’s a hot topic, or what would be the easiest one to do…

Or you just came back from an absolutely amazing vacation! You love everything about it and want to tell everyone how wonderful it was! But when it comes to sitting down and dipping the pen into an ink-jar (or rather placing your fingers on a keyboard) – you feel stuck. There is just too much to talk about!

I am here to help you! I’ll share with you some good travel blog post ideas and strategies I use that’ll help you to start writing. Enjoy!

Recent Travel – Blog Post Ideas

When you are inspired to write about a country, consider creating either a category page or a Travel Guide type of page that will have a brief summary of the key to-knows about that destination (for example, here is my Belarus Family Travel Guide). And then proceed to the “core three”.

CORE-THREE Travel Posts

When we come back from a travel adventure, the first thing I do, I write the CORE-THREE blog posts:

  1. Top things to do in [Destination] with your family (solo, as a couple, with kids, family-friendly, etc.)
  2. Hotel / Resort Review
  3. Feature of the best item from the “Things to-do” list

Here is an example of CORE-THREE posts I've done on Varadero, Cuba:

These CORE-THREE are the easiest to do and provide tons of introductory value to your readers. The best part, you can quickly interlink these CORE-Three. You can also get some of the links into these posts linking to other blogger’s posts about particular attractions of things to do (in exchange for linking back of course). Event the Hotel Review can have links to other blogger's reviews that your audience will definitely appreciate.

.

Travel Destination – Next Steps Blog Post Ideas

Once the CORE-THREE are completed, I can now start going into details about the destination:

  1. Packing list tips and check-list  — here you can collect emails in exchange for a printable checklist
  2. Feature of any other or all “Things to do” at a [Destination]
  3. Top 5 things our family loved the most about [Destination]
  4. Interesting facts about [Destination]
  5. History of [Destination]
  6. Fascinating facts about local culture at [Destination]
  7. Top ## must-see attractions off-the-beaten-path in [Destination]
  8. Most unusual activities in [Destination]
  9. Kids-friendly things to do in [Destination]
  10. Wheelchair accessible / Stroller Accessible things to do in [Destination]
  11. Local Art / Street Art of [Destination]
  12. Top ## Museums you can’t miss at [Destination]
  13. Castles to visit in [Destination]
  14. Beautiful nature of [Destination]  – national parks, mountains, forests, etc.
  15. Best beaches to visit in [Destination]
  16. Family-friendly restaurants in [Destination]
  17. Pet-friendly activities and attractions in [Destination]
  18. Best books / TV shows about travel to [Destination]
  19. Top things to bring home as souvenirs from [Destination]
  20. Most Instagrammable places in [Destination]
  21. Top local Instagram accounts you should follow in [Destination]
  22. How to find free wifi in [Destination]
  23. How to rent a car in [Destination]
  24. Dos and Don’ts when you travel to [Destination]
  25. Top ## mistakes to avoid when visiting [Destination]

The list of ideas can go on and on for a particular destination.

If you are writing about a unique travel experience, something that not too many people would risk trying (eg. diving with sharks in Australia) or a destination that is typically too far or too expensive to visit (ex. French Polinesia) – the more you write about it in various forms – the better. As with enough unique content you can now be considered an “expert” in this area. Could be quite beneficial for future media exposure and brand partnerships.

That's one of the reasons, for example, I am not rushing to write about New York or London, but am jumping at an opportunity to feature Cuba, El Salvador, India, Belarus, or Hawaii 🙂
