Whistler Bungee Jumping – Freefall From The Highest Bungee Bridge in British Columbia

Take a leap of faith with Whistler Bungee and freefall from over 160ft height towards the rushing ice-cold waters of Cheakamus River!

To many people, bungee jumping seems like an absurd idea. Why would someone in their right mind want to be leaping off a cliff with only a piece of sketchy-looking cord keeping them safe? If you look closer, however, you’ll see that Bungee jumping is one of the safest opportunities to experience freefall, the adrenaline rush, and the freedom of leaping from a great height. The best thing, we have an amazing location right at our doorstep! Whistler Bungee has the highest bungee bridge in British Columbia that operates year-round and boasts an impeccable bungee jumping safety record. What else can you ask for?

This is a story of our experience leaping off Whistler Bungee Bridge and a summary of everything you need to know to check your own bungee jump bucket-list item off your adventure checklist!

Whistler Bungee

Whistler Bungee is the adventure sports company located in Whistler Village, BC that offers British Columbia’s highest year-round bungee jumping experience. Originally opened in 2002, this company, Whistler Bungee jumping boasts an impeccable safety record – zero accidents over 200,000 jumps performed

Whistler Bungee Bridge is thrown over the Cheakamus River that wields its way from Whistler to Squamish.

The bridge is not a suspension bridge, but a solid one made of metal. Whistler Bungee height is 160ft (50 meters) above the rushing ice-cold waters. That is super high! Almost as high as a 20-story building!

If the bridge can’t impress you, the surrounding landscapes and natural wonders certainly will!

The Cheakamus River canyon is lined with ancient basalt cliffs that look completely stunning. While at the bridge you can enjoy some breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding mountains with snowy tops, and the iconic Black Tusk to the North.

Did you know, there is a hiking trail crossing over the Whistler Bungee Bridge – the Sea to Sky Trail – that starts over from Brandywine Falls Provincial Park. You can actually make it all the way to Whistler this way – great eco-friendly Whistler activity to enjoy on a good weather day with many cool Insta-friendly lookout spots!

.

Whistler Bungee Reservations

All reservations for Whistler Bungee Jumping must be made in advance. May to September is the peak season for this adventure outdoor activity, so it can be extremely difficult to find an available spot, let alone to perfectly fit your jump into your travel dates. Book as early as you can.

The reservations can be made ONLINE, via the phone with a credit card, or in-person at Whistler Bungee Office located in Whistler Village

You will be asked to prepay for your jump at the time of reservation. No worries, there is a free cancellation option – in most cases, you can cancel for free within 24 hours of your expected bungee jump.

.

Driving Directions

Once you have your Whistler Bungee Jumping reservation confirmed, drive directly to WHISTLER BUNGEE BRIDGE – it is located 15-20 minutes south of Whistler Village.

Do NOT simply google “Whistler Bungee” or “Whistler Bungee Jumping” for directions, as it will lead you to their office in Whistler Village instead.

Here are the map and the link to the location:

If you drive from Vancouver, it may take you about 1.5 hours to get to the Whistler Bungee Bridge. But it is best to take extra time to travel.

Whistler bungee bridge google maps driving directions from Vancouver

Sea to Sky highway from Vancouver to Whistler is consistently voted as one of Canada’s most spectacular roads. There is no doubt you’d want to stop along the way to take photos or to have a snack in Squamish.

In addition, when leaving Vancouver during weekdays, you might experience rush-hour traffic affecting both Vancouver bridges – Lions Gate and the Iron Workers Memorial.

.

On-Site Parking

There is free parking next to the bridge. Spots are limited, however, so please park perpendicular to the river and as close to other cars as possible. (I haven’t heard that cars require to socially-distance, have you?)

.

Whistler Bungee Shuttle Service

If you don’t have access to a vehicle, you could organize transport from Whistler Village for a small fee in the past. Unfortunately, this option is not currently available due to social distancing requirements related to the covid19 situation. If stuck, try checking with their office in advance.

.

Whistler Bungee Facilities

The Bungee Bridge is located in the middle of nowhere in the ancient forest. There is nothing there except for a very experienced and supportive Whistler Bungee jumping team.

You will find portable washrooms. You won’t find anything else – no snacks, no shops, no amenities.

Upon arrival, you should park the car, come up, cross the bridge, and check-in at the Registration.

Staff will ask you to fill in and sign a waiver form, they will weight you and give you a ticket.

Then you will go back to the bridge to wait for your turn to jump. Easy-peasy.

Once you are done with your jump and safely back up, you should go back to the Registration desk to see the photos Whistler Bungee team took for you. You can purchase those right then and there.

What to Wear When Bungee Jumping?

woman in red tshirt flying off the Whistler bungee bridge

.

Wear loose comfortable weather-appropriate clothing.

It is best to wear long pants or longer shorts so that you can comfortably fit into the harness. Skirts and dresses are a bad idea.

Ensure your shoes are well-fitting and tied-up. If unsure – take those off and jump barefoot.

No hats, sunglasses or any loose or bulky items are allowed – it is just too easy to “make a donation” to the Cheakamus River this way.

You are likely not going to be allowed to jump wearing a super-hero cape, as it can become a safety issue potentially tangling with the cord.

If you have long hair – tie-up a ponytail. Same story here: your very long hair can become a safety issue, or just abstract your view during the fall. Keep it up!

If you are bungee jumping by yourself and need to temporarily store your backpack, phone, or car keys – you can ask the staff at the Registration desk.

Yes, I believe you CAN jump fully naked. Better to discuss your plan with Whistler Bungee staff in advance. One thing is clear though, and they officially state it on their website: you won’t get any discount for jumping naked. Sorry.

Whistler Bungee Jumping During COVID19 Crisis

Alexandra giving thumbs up before bungee jumping

YES! They are OPEN already!

In fact, the first day Whistler Bungee opened doors after lockdown – May 29, 2020 – they got booked up! It looks like people were so tired of sitting at home, anything was on the table… Jumping off the bridge?!! Bring it on!

Bungee Jumping post covid19 closure comes with a new set of rules, however.

Here is the exact list that was communicated to us before our bungee jumps (from Whistler Bungee email):

  • Whistler Bungee requires you to wear a facemask during your jump process, please bring one with you to the bridge
  • Please arrive at your scheduled booking time to minimize extra people on the bridge
  • Keep unnecessary clothing and personal items in your vehicle
  • Use the washroom before arriving at our facility if possible
  • Practice physical distancing wherever possible on the bridge and throughout the site
  • Adhere to mandatory hand sanitizing before and after activity
  • Refrain from touching your face

YES, YOU WILL BE JUMPING WEARING A MASK.

This is a great opportunity to get creative too! Check out these cool bandanas, scarves and face masks you can use instead of a standard mask for example:

If you forgot a mask, one will be provided by the staff right at the Whistler Bungee Bridge Registration.

Did You Know That at Whistler Bungee…

You Can Bungee Jump Together

Wouldn’t this be something cool to do for your wedding, marriage anniversary, or to forge a BFF relationship? At Whistler Bungee, two people can jump together – this is called a Tandem jump. The only limitation is that the combined weight of you two must be below 300lb.

You Can Jump Twice

When you are already at the Whistler Bungee Bridge and loved your first experience so much that you want to take the leap again… you can do it right then and there! Provided there is an additional spot available on the day of your bungee jump that is. You can check with the Registration desk right away.

If you plan on doing two jumps before arriving at Whistler Bungee Bridge, it is best to book both in advance.

Your Kids Can Bungee Jump Too!

Whistler Bungee does not have age limitations as such. From what the staff told me, as long as you are of a certain weight and can be fixed into the harness – you can jump! That weight is approx 50 pounds. What does it tell me? My son, who is now 4yo, can potentially be jumping from the Whistler Bungee Bridge with me next year (if he is willing to do it of course)! Who would have thought Bungee Jumping could be a kids’ activity, right?!

NOTE: Anyone who is under 16 needs the consent of a parent or a guardian and their signature on the waiver form.

You Can Bungee Jump in Winter!

Yep, Whistler Bungee jumping is open all year round, rain or shine. The only time they have to close is during a lightning storm, as the Whistler Bungee Bridge is made of metal. Otherwise, you can add the Leap to your list of eco-friendly Whistler winter activities and impress everyone with an epic story!

Make Memories of Your Bungee Jumping Adventure!

You’ll no doubt want to capture the moment and share your experience with your friends, family, and all your Instagram fans! After all, you’ll have earned bragging rights fair and square. Here are a few ways you can have proof.

.

Taking Photos at Whistler Bungee Bridge

During your bungee jump, friends and family can observe and take photos and film videos.

They can stand on the Whistler Bungee Bridge, yet won’t be allowed near you once the staff started to prepping you and strapping you into the harness.

The view of the jumping spot (and your horrified face)  from the allowed portion of the bridge is a bit too obstructed by the safety equipment and staff members making sure all goes as planned.

Bring a selfie stick to get a better shot! Only the kind with 100% secure holder and a strap – the one you know won’t get your phone slip away into the depth of the river. If unsure – duct tape! Duct tape both: the phone to the selfie stick AND the stick to the hand of the one who does the honor of taking your photos!

Here is the selfie stick we use (and we have added duct tape reinforcement of course).

There is another good place to take photos if you have a professional camera with a good zoom – that is on the other side of the Whistler Bungee Bridge. Here is the map.

Bring Your GoPro

GoPro is the absolute best camera for any adventure sports. Whistler bungee jumping is no exception.

We have GoPro HERO8.

GoPro Hero 8 action camera

There are many GoPro accessories you can purchase and can have a variety of setups.

You can affix your GoPro to your body or wear it on your head. This way you can capture the speed of your fall from the bridge and the river rushing towards you.

However, if you want to capture your face and your emotions of the jump, we recommend using the hand mount for GoPro, and the camera facing towards you. Keep your hands stretched in front of you during your jump and you will have an awesome video to laugh at in the years to come!

If you haven’t purchased special accessories, you could use good old duct tape to affix it to you. Whatever you do, make sure the camera is not loose, as you do not want to injure yourself or to lose it to the river altogether.

.

Aerial Drones Are Allowed!

Cheakamus River as seen from Whistler Bungee bridge with a bungee jumper hanging over it

Yes! Aerial drones are allowed near the Whistler Bungee Bridge during your jump.

There is one condition: you can not fly your drone directly over or under the bridge or any area near the bridge where it can come in contact with a jumper.

Otherwise, 100% bring your drone!

We use DJI Mavic MINI – a perfect little drone just under 250 grams (249 grams to be exact) that do not require registration nor a pilot license according to Canadian regulations as of June 2020. Well, we still have our licenses and we still have our little drone registered, but we didn’t have to .. just saying.

You can not fly a drone and jump all by yourself. You will need a friend or a family member to fly the drone for you. You won’t be able to ask a staff member to fly the drone for you as that is a liability issue. So bring a friend!

The best spot to fly the drone during the jump is from the parking lot at the base of Whistler Bungee Bridge.

For best shots fly your drone about 10 meters south of the bridge, facing north and tilting the camera gimbal down. Here is a nice shot made from 50m altitude.

Other tips:

  • fly your drone on Sports mode as the wind over the river is pretty strong.
  • Do not cross over the bridge to the other side: the Whistler Bungee Bridge is made of metal and you will get reception interference and can lose connection to your aircraft even at a short distance.

What If I Forgot My Camera or Don’t Have Anyone With Me To Take Photos?

Not to worry, Whistler Bungee has professional photographers on the bridge who will record the glorious moment for you! (for a fee) You can get photos uploaded on your phone right then and there, or you can take your photos home on a USB stick, and even get the photos e-transferred to you later.

Whistler Bungee team does not record video and does not provide GoPro cameras, so bring your own.

.

Wait… But Is Bungee Jumping Even Safe?

.

It is safe to say that Bungee Jumping is one of the safest adventure sports out there. Bungee jump companies must abide by extremely strict safety guidelines and standards: the equipment and safety policies, staff training, strict requirements of instructing jumpers, and the triple-checks they do on you when you are standing on that bridge.

The highly technical shock cord (aka “the rope”) used at Whistler Bungee is made from highly durable latex, reinforced by a strong outer shell. Overall Whistler Bungee’s equipment meets all required CBA, NABA, DERSA, SANZ, and Australian jump specifications.

Yet, I am sorry to say that, nothing, literally nothing is 100% safe. That is why you ARE asked to sign a waiver at the registration desk to confirm you understand the risks.

Accidents still can occur due to equipment malfunction or if the instructions are not followed in full.

Official World death statistics on Bungee Jumping is that approx 1 person in 500,000 has an accident resulting in a fatality. You are 75 times likely to die of a car crash, or 5 times likely to die of a plane crash.

So in my terms, this experience is pretty safe.

Yet the good news is that Whistler Bungee jumping has a perfect safety record – ZERO accidents since they opened their doors in 2002 – that is over 200,000 jumps completed.

Our Own Experience Jumping From Whistler Bungee Bridge

woman in red tshirt jumping from Whistler bungee bridge

For both Alex and me this was our first-time bungee jumping. Although bungee had a firm place on our bucket list, I did not expect to do it in Whistler – more like New Zealand maybe.

We signed up to do the jumps as a part of filming an episode for a popular Russian travel show. We were filming all the time using phones, a camera, a GoPro and our drone. Still, I had to jump twice to get the footage we needed. Yep, twice!

Do not regret it a single bit! The first bungee jump was terrifying and all I could remember when I came back up is the sound of my voice screaming my lungs out. But once the adrenaline rush kicked in, the second jump was easy-peasy and I was finally able to enjoy the freefall experience.

I am actually somewhat embarrassed that our visit to bungee jumping ended up as a “classic tourist noob” experience. We, of course, forgot our own masks and were graciously given disposable ones on-site. We also had to run to the car and back to grab the credit card to pay for the second jump and for photos… Yet, the Whistler Bungee team did not even blink!

.

Special Thank you to the Whistler Bungee staff

Matt, I must say you have a wonderful top-notch professional team. Everyone was super-helpful, super-supportive, and even fun!

I still remember me standing on that Whistler Bungee Bridge at the final count down and being asked are you ready?” “No!” “Ok, let’s do it anyway!” Next thing I know I am freefalling…

Also, Dara, the girl who booked us in on the phone, is the absolute treasure to deal with 🙂 We’ve probably spoken a dozen times ironing out the details. She is simply amazing.

.

Concluding Notes

Whistler has proven time and again to be an outstanding destination for family travel, and a great bucket-list place to visit in Canada. Now you know that, along with other popular outdoor activities, you can even bungee jump in Whistler with your kids!

Is Bungee Jumping crazy? YES INDEED!

Should you do it at least once in your life? ABSOLUTELY.

Bungee jumping is usually a terrifying experience for first-timers. Honestly, though, it is not as scary as it may seem, so you should just relax and enjoy the moment. Maybe even twice, as did we 🙂
