Kahana Sunset, Maui Hawaii – Family Review and Honest Feedback

To Stay or Not to Stay at Kahana Sunset vacation rentals when Visiting Maui, Hawaii? This is a detailed review by a Canadian family traveling with a toddler, tips on choosing the best vacation rentals.

Of all the places we’ve traveled to-date, Hawaii is by far makes up the Top 5 favorite places in the World on our family list! The minute you step out of the airport, it hits you – the relaxed “chill” atmosphere, laidback smiling people, the smell of warm ocean air. All of a sudden all your stress is taken away and you are instantly in a “vacation mode”. What would make your holiday trip to Maui Hawaii more enjoyable? A nice and comfortable place to stay of course! Kahana Sunset condo vacation rentals near Lahaina were just such a perfect place for our family Maui vacation! This article is our Kahana Sunset review and honest feedback.

Kahana Sunset Location

There are few vacation rentals called “Kahana” in Maui, Hawaii. Kahana Sunset, Kahana Beach Resort, Kahana Village vacation rentals, Kahana Villa, etc.

Kahana Sunset condo vacation rentals are the ones we’ve stayed at when visited Maui last time.

The resort is located on the West side of Maui, about 15 min drive from Lahaina village – a popular tourist destination with shops, bars, restaurants, art galleries, a local port providing countless excursions and entertainment options.

In our opinion, the location is quite convenient, as it is just the right distance away from all the buzz so you can enjoy a quiet family vacation with your little kids, but also near enough so you have an option to go out. 

Better still, about 5 min by car (15 min by bicycle) and you get to Kaanapali town. Here you can enjoy local stores, bars, cafes, and the food at their local Fish Market is to die for! 

10 min by car (or 20 min by bike) the other way, and you are at the famous and spectacular Honolua Bay!

Guest Reviews and Booking

Before I go into details about our experience, I should mention the following: If you are booking through a service like Booking.com – you are assigned any available condo that matches your search criteria. You would not be able to find out the exact condo number in advance. 

Why is it a problem?

You won’t be able to use TripAdvisor to validate your decision, as they apparently have each and every condo as a separate object in there! Yes, you’ve heard it – on TripAdvisor, there are over a few dozen Kahana Sunset condos listed with photos of each – and some are very different. 

If you are looking to best use hotel reviews, in this case, it is better to go by what the booking site has – Booking.com has all reviews in one place. If you see a good review mentioning the condo number: then you can use this info to research on TripAdvisor to see exactly how the condo unit looks like. 

Then you can collect 3-4 options you like, and request to be placed in that specific unit via a booking site messaging service – if you’re booking through Booking.com. No guarantees, but simply a better option.

An alternative would be to reserve a specific unit you like either directly through the property management or via AirBnB – this could be more expensive, but you can guarantee the unit this way. …and YES Kahana Sunset condos are on AirBnB, along with many other incredible Maui AirBnB rentals.

Kahana Sunset Property

Kahana Sunset vacation rentals in Maui, Hawaii is a self-catered condo complex – which is awesome if you travel to Hawaii amidst covid.  

The following is included in your stay:

• Vacation rental condo
• Parking spot
• WiFi access
• Access to a private beach, pool, shared amenities

Kahana Sunset is a large property, but due to its layout feels very cozy. We absolutely loved this feeling.

There are few low-rise buildings scattered throughout, all facing the ocean and encompassed by the vivid greenery of the tropical garden.

In the middle of it all is the shared area with a swimming pool and BBQ available to guests. 

In addition to each Kahana Sunset condo having its own terrace, there are few shared decks and terraces scattered around. 

The main terrace, overlooking the beach, has tables and chairs you can use to have an outdoor lunch or dinner with a view. It even has a communal library.

Kahana Sunset is a super-clean place – cleaning is done every day. We haven’t seen a single piece of garbage anywhere, including the beach. 

The tropical garden is simply magical. Well maintained and blooming, it is full of birds and geckos! Our son Cosmos had so much fun with the wildlife at Kahana Sunset!

We are also pleased to report that Kahana Sunset vacation rentals offer options for guests with disabilities. Most of the property is wheelchair accessible.

Kahana Sunset Beach

Kahana Sunset is a beachfront property. Importantly, Kahana Sunset is absolutely invaluable as it has its own private beach – not too many properties in Maui or even in Hawaii can boast that. We've made few stops at public beaches, and frankly, it is a total nightmare: too many people along with security concerns, privacy concerns and total interference with enjoyment. So yes, the fact that Kahana Sunset has its own private beach is definitely earning its bonus points on our review.

Lounge chairs are available for use at the beach, and at the deck just above the beach. There is a shower conveniently located just outside the beach so you can wash away the sand.

The sand is soft, fine and golden in color. It is such a pleasure to play in it with your kids, build sandcastles and sand walls.

Be mindful though, as the waters are not quite shallow – there is a sudden drop a few meters into the water – be sure to watch your kids. There are NO lifeguards on duty at the beach.

There are some reefs close to the shore that you can explore while snorkeling. It is easy to lose track of time though, and in Hawaiian sun the results could be quite literally painful. We strongly recommend a rashguard and sunscreen (reef-safe natural chemical-free sunscreen of course.

Hawaii Packing List For Active Family Holidays

The absolute best thing about the private beach at Kahana Sunset, well, actually two things, are: turtles and sunsets.

Turtles

If you travel with your kids, you couldn’t find a better spot to watch and interact with large sea turtles! They are right there at the beach and in the water near the beach feeding off the reefs. 

Our 3yo son’s mind was absolutely blown away by the turtles. 

The best part: you have them all for yourself since the beach is private. As mentioned above, Kahana Sunset is lucky to have a private beach as not too many affordable properties in Maui do.

Sunsets 

Kahana Sunset condos are facing directly West. The sunsets are absolutely spectacular! I am leaving a few photos here, as I believe those speak better than words.

Kahana Sunset review – Beach – ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

Our Vacation Rental Condo at Kahana Sunset

We’ve been given a condo E5E, conveniently located right at the corner of E building (second line). It was at the perfect level – one flight of stairs to the parking, access to the pool and steps away from the beach. In our opinion, for a family traveling with a 3yo, the location couldn’t have been better!

Hidden in the tropical greenery and high enough and so we are not disturbed by the buzz from the pool, and at the same time close enough to the beach that our toddler can go in and out of the suite and play outside in our full view.

The unit was spacious and consisted of the living room, a full kitchen, and a bedroom. There was a large walk-through terrace with a private table we could use. You can also open the floor-to-ceiling terrace windows and walk in and out without using the main entrance – once again quite convenient with kids.

The condition of the room was very good, and it was cleaned every day. Kahana Sunset condo complex management has provided us with all necessities.

Kahana Sunset Condo – Living Room

Kahana Sunset condo unit Living room furniture & amenities:

• Large sofa
• Two armchairs
• Shelving unit
• TV
• a Stereo (!) with CDs and audio cassettes (!) – I haven’t seen those in ages!
• Coffee table
• Dining table with 4 chairs
• Side table
• Books, Wall art, etc. 
• Ceiling vent

Our unit had tile floors – which is amazing since you have all this sand from the beach. Plus traveling with an active toddler – you never know! The reason I am mentioning this, as I’ve seen photos of other units that looked like they had carpets and rugs. 

In addition, we have found beach towels waiting for us on the couch. Yey, no need to bring our own or to buy any! Thank you.

Kahana Sunset Condo – Bedroom

Kahana Sunset condo unit Living room furniture & amenities:

• King bed
• Shelving unit with books and games
• Two side tables with lamps
• Dresser
• Walk-in closet
• Ironing board, iron
• Luggage racks
• Chairs
• Ceiling vent

The bed was large and quite comfortable – it was actually perfect for the three of us. We slept with our son in the middle. 

The only discomfort we’ve experienced was: the windows in the bedroom do not have the glass. These only have wooden shades that even when fully closed do not sit tight and are not sound-proof. One of the nights a guy next door was talking loudly on the phone with someone at 6 am and this woke all of us up.

So bring earplugs! 

The ceiling vent was enough to circulate the air without the need for the air conditioner. So this was a perfect option for us.

Kahana Sunset Condo – Kitchen

• Dishwasher
• Microwave
• Stove
• Coffee Maker
• Dishware, glasses, mugs
• Silverware, knives, BBQ utensils
• Pans, Cooking utensils, including baking needs

All kitchen amenities worked.

I personally really liked that they had a separate bin for recycling items.

On arrival, we’ve been provided with a “starter kit” that included: a few dishwasher tablets, paper towels, kleenex, condiments, garbage bags. This was a nice touch. 

When staying at Kahana Sunset, or any other, vacation rental you are expected to self-cater. Luckily you can get everything you need from department stores located nearby. 

There are local markets, Safeway, Walmart, and even Costco on Maui island!

Bathroom

Kahana Sunset condo unit bathroom amenities:

• Shower
• Toilet
• Sink & powder space which was completely separate from the toilet and the shower – awesome!
• Hairdryer
• Washer and Dryer
• Towels

We had enough towels – both bathroom towels and beach towels – so we could circulate those through washer/dryer to ensure we always have clean ones. 

Right inside the closet with washer and dryer, we’ve found two mini surfing boards! Our son had so much fun playing in the ocean with these!

Kahana Sunset Condo – Security

Kahana Sunset is located away from the main tourist center in a quiet residential area. It is rare that you’d see a person on the street. From the main drive-way to actual condos there is quite a bit of distance + there are security gates. There are security cameras throughout the property as well. 

We felt absolutely safe by leaving our car unlocked next to our condo. 

Each condo has a coded lock with a unique combination for each door. You do not have to carry around any kind of key, so no worries to lose it.

Before you leave, however, and if you are concerned about your property left in the room, we advise you to check the terrace doors. These doors are floor-to-ceiling and, if not locked, are easily opened from outside. 

Kahana Sunset condo property management also offers a security deposit box at their office. We did not need to use it during our stay, however.

Internet

Kahana Sunset provides free WiFi. The password can be found in the welcome kit. The network is not secure – so we strongly advise you to enable your VPN. 

The speed is very good – we were able to watch Netflix and download cartoons for our son with no hick-ups.

Cash 

What currency should you bring? 

Hawaii is a part of the United States, and you should bring US dollars with you. You can exchange currency right at the airport, main resort areas will also have exchange points, including major hotels would be able to exchange money for you at the front desk 24/7.

Credit cards, including the American Express, are widely accepted. 

The only place we really had to use cash with no other options – is the Road to Hana, its fruit stands and Huli-Huli-Chicken cafe. 

While staying at Kahana Sunset, you won’t really need cash – there is no food service, and the stay is already paid through your credit card.

What’s Around & Things To Do In Maui, Hawaii

You may be tempted to spend the whole vacation at Kahana Sunset, and I get it! Kahana’s private beach with its reefs, turtles, soft sand, and stunning sunsets is well worth it to be there every day!

I, however, encourage you to venture out, explore, and discover for yourself why everyone is rating Maui as the best Hawaii island for families. So take a road trip through Maui, get adventurous, see the sunset at Haleakala, get introduced to local culture and art, learn some Hawaiian Pidgin to communicate with locals!

In our honest opinion, Kahana Sunset vacation rentals is an amazing budget option for families, especially those with little kids. After staying there we recommend Kahana Sunset vacation rentals to all our friends visiting Maui.
